Depending on the environment, additional certifications may be required, such as ATEX for hazardous areas or specific standards for high temperatures and corrosive conditions. Which certifications are precisely mandatory depends on the sector, the installation location, and the applicable laws and regulations. In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions about certifications for industrial lighting so that you know exactly what to look out for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mandatory versus recommended standards for industrial luminaires<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every certification carries the same weight. For industrial LED luminaires, the CE mark and compliance with the EMC Directive and the Low Voltage Directive are legally required within the European Union. Without these marks, a luminaire simply may not be placed on the European market. Other certifications, such as ENEC or additional quality marks, are technically strongly recommended but not always legally required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CE mark indicates that a product complies with European safety guidelines. However, it is a manufacturer's self-declaration, not an independent inspection. The <strong>ENEC certification<\/strong> goes a step further: it is issued by an independent testing body and confirms that the product has actually been tested and inspected. For professional industrial applications, ENEC is therefore a strong signal of quality, even though it is not mandatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, sector-specific or location-based standards may apply. Think of NEN standards for electrical installations in the Netherlands, or requirements arising from insurance conditions or the client's safety protocols. The code consists of two digits: the first digit represents dust protection (scale 0 to 6), and the second represents water protection (scale 0 to 9K). A luminaire with IP65 is completely dust-tight and resistant to water jets from any direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In industrial environments, a minimum IP rating of IP65 is generally the baseline. For outdoor applications, near spray booths, or in environments with high levels of dust or dirt, IP66 or IP67 is more prudent. IP67 means the luminaire can be temporarily submerged in water up to a depth of one meter. IP69K offers protection against high-pressure and steam-cleaning equipment, which is relevant in the food industry or for certain industrial cleaning processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good to know: the <a href=\"https:\/\/jelproducts.nl\/en\/ip-rating\/\">IP and IK rating<\/a> are no guarantee of permanent protection. Improper installation, damaged seals, or worn-out gaskets can reduce the degree of protection in practice. During installation, always check that the luminaire is installed correctly and that the cable entries are properly sealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the IK value for mechanical impact resistance mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IK rating indicates the degree of mechanical protection of a luminaire against external impacts and blows. The scale ranges from IK00 (no protection) to IK10 (resistant to an impact of 20 joules, comparable to a 5 kg drop from a height of 40 cm). The higher the IK rating, the better the luminaire is able to withstand physical impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In locations where machinery operates, materials are moved, or work is performed right next to the luminaires, a high IK rating is essential. A luminaire with IK08 or IK10 can withstand accidental collisions, falling objects, or tool contact. This reduces the risk of breakage, failure, and hazardous situations caused by damaged housings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note: the IK rating says nothing about the protection of the light source itself, only the housing. A luminaire with a high IK rating but a fragile lens offers less protection in practice than the rating suggests. Choose luminaires where both the housing and the cover plate or lens are included in the impact resistance tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is ATEX certification mandatory for lighting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ATEX certification is required when lighting is installed in areas where explosive atmospheres may form due to the presence of flammable gases, vapors, mists, or dust. This is stipulated in the European ATEX Directive 2014\/34\/EU. This requirement applies to all electrical equipment, including light luminaires, used in such zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ATEX zones are classified based on the frequency and duration of explosion hazards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><strong>Zone 0 \/ Zone 20:<\/strong> Explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods (gas respectively dust)<\/li>\n <li><strong>Zone 1 \/ Zone 21:<\/strong> Explosive atmosphere may occasionally occur during normal operation<\/li>\n <li><strong>Zone 2 \/ Zone 22:<\/strong> An explosive atmosphere is unlikely during normal operation, but may occur briefly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each zone requires luminaires with a specific ATEX category and temperature class. The use of non-certified lighting in an ATEX zone is not only a violation of the law, but also poses a serious safety risk. Consider applications in the petrochemical industry, refineries, storage tanks for flammable liquids, or certain departments in the food industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Certifications for high temperatures and corrosive environments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standard IP and IK ratings are insufficient in extreme conditions. For lighting in environments with extreme heat or exposure to aggressive chemicals, additional certifications and technical specifications are required. These include temperature classes, corrosion resistance classes, and material specifications for the housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At high temperatures, the maximum ambient temperature (Ta) specified on the luminaire is a critical parameter. Standard luminaires are generally suitable for temperatures up to +40 \u00b0C or +50 \u00b0C. In steel mills, foundries, or near furnaces, temperatures can rise above +80 \u00b0C or even +120 \u00b0C. Light luminaires for such environments must be specifically designed and tested for that temperature range, including protection against infrared radiation. A CE marking alone is not sufficient proof: always request the corresponding Declaration of Conformity (DoC) and verify that the listed standards comply with the application requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow these steps for a thorough verification:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><strong>Request the Declaration of Conformity:<\/strong> This document specifies which European directives and standards apply and who is responsible for the declaration.<\/li>\n <li><strong>Check the test certificates:<\/strong> For ATEX, ENEC and IP\/IK ratings, independent test certificates must be available, issued by an accredited body (such as DEKRA, T\u00dcV or Bureau Veritas).<\/li>\n <li><strong>Verify the certificate number:<\/strong> ATEX certificates can be verified in the European ATEX certificate database. ENEC certificates can be verified on the ENEC website.<\/li>\n <li><strong>Check the validity:<\/strong> Certificates have an expiration date.
