Depending on the environment, additional certifications may be required, such as ATEX for hazardous areas or specific standards for high temperatures and corrosive conditions. Which certifications are precisely mandatory depends on the sector, the installation location, and the applicable laws and regulations. Not every certification carries the same weight. For industrial LED luminaires, the CE mark and compliance with the EMC Directive and the Low Voltage Directive are legally required within the European Union. Without these marks, a luminaire simply may not be placed on the European market. Other certifications, such as ENEC or additional quality marks, are technically strongly recommended but not always legally required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CE mark indicates that a product complies with European safety guidelines. However, it is a manufacturer's self-declaration, not an independent inspection. The ENEC certification<\/strong> goes a step further: it is issued by an independent testing body and confirms that the product has actually been tested and inspected. For professional industrial applications, ENEC is therefore a strong signal of quality, even though it is not mandatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition, sector-specific or location-based standards may apply. Think of NEN standards for electrical installations in the Netherlands, or requirements arising from insurance conditions or the client's safety protocols. Real lighting expertise<\/a> also includes knowledge of which standards apply in which context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The IP rating (Ingress Protection) indicates the degree to which an LED luminaire is protected against the ingress of dust and water. The code consists of two digits: the first digit represents dust protection (scale 0 to 6), and the second represents water protection (scale 0 to 9K). A luminaire with IP65 is completely dust-tight and resistant to water jets from any direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In industrial environments, a minimum IP rating of IP65 is generally the baseline. For outdoor applications, near spray booths, or in environments with high levels of dust or dirt, IP66 or IP67 is more prudent. IP67 means the fixture can be temporarily submerged in water up to a depth of one meter. IP69K offers protection against high-pressure and steam-cleaning equipment, which is relevant in the food industry or for certain industrial cleaning processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Good to know: the IP and IK rating<\/a> are no guarantee of permanent protection. Improper installation, damaged seals, or worn-out gaskets can reduce the degree of protection in practice. During installation, always check that the fixture is installed correctly and that the cable entries are properly sealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The IK rating indicates the degree of mechanical protection of a luminaire against external impacts and blows. The scale ranges from IK00 (no protection) to IK10 (resistant to an impact of 20 joules, comparable to a 5 kg drop from a height of 40 cm). The higher the IK rating, the better the luminaire is able to withstand physical impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In locations where machinery operates, materials are moved, or work is performed right next to the fixtures, a high IK rating is essential. A fixture with IK08 or IK10 can withstand accidental collisions, falling objects, or tool contact. This reduces the risk of breakage, failure, and hazardous situations caused by damaged housings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Please note: the IK rating says nothing about the protection of the light source itself, only the housing. A luminaire with a high IK rating but a fragile lens offers less protection in practice than the rating suggests. Choose luminaires where both the housing and the cover plate or lens are included in the impact resistance tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ATEX certification is required when lighting is installed in areas where explosive atmospheres may form due to the presence of flammable gases, vapors, mists, or dust. This is stipulated in the European ATEX Directive 2014\/34\/EU. This requirement applies to all electrical equipment, including light fixtures, used in such zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ATEX zones are classified based on the frequency and duration of explosion hazards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each zone requires luminaires with a specific ATEX category and temperature class. The use of non-certified lighting in an ATEX zone is not only a violation of the law, but also poses a serious safety risk. Consider applications in the petrochemical industry, refineries, storage tanks for flammable liquids, or certain departments in the food industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Standard IP and IK ratings are insufficient in extreme conditions. For lighting in environments with extreme heat or exposure to aggressive chemicals, additional certifications and technical specifications are required. These include temperature classes, corrosion resistance classes, and material specifications for the housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At high temperatures, the maximum ambient temperature (Ta) specified on the luminaire is a critical parameter. Standard luminaires are generally suitable for temperatures up to +40\u00b0C or +50\u00b0C. In steel mills, foundries, or near furnaces, temperatures can rise above +80\u00b0C or even +120\u00b0C. A reliable supplier provides test certificates proactively and transparently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A good example of how certifications work in practice is the project for DFDS, a major European ferry and logistics operator. At their terminal, the lighting had to meet strict requirements in terms of IP protection and mechanical impact resistance, because fixtures are continuously exposed to salty sea air, moving heavy equipment, and intensive outdoor conditions. The corrosive port environment required high-grade material housings with a surface treatment suitable for C5 environments in accordance with ISO 12944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the main technical challenges was also ensuring the certifications not at all<\/em> The luminaires were mounted. Incorrect cable entries or careless installation can negate the IP rating in practice \u2014 a risk that was actively mitigated in this project through precise engineering and installation guidance.
