The proximity to open water causes high humidity and unobstructed wind currents, meaning storm fronts encounter little resistance. High gantry cranes, light poles of twenty meters or more, and extensive metal quay structures act as natural lightning rods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the electrical infrastructure runs over long distances. Switching heavy electric motors, transformers, and frequency converters on and off also causes short, severe voltage spikes on the grid that penetrate through the supply line to the luminaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On terminals and in heavy industry, switching loads are ubiquitous: cranes, ship-to-shore crane motors, forklifts with charging points, and compressors are constantly switching on and off. Every switching action injects a transient voltage spike into the network. LED drivers are sensitive to these spikes because they operate with precise electronics that can be pushed beyond their design tolerances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lightning strikes add an extra dimension to this. A direct strike to a mast or cable generates voltage surges of thousands of volts. However, a strike hundreds of meters away can also introduce high peak voltages onto the power supply line via ground conduction or induction. Without adequate protection, both situations result in damaged or completely failed luminaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the difference between surge protection and lightning protection?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they describe two separate layers of security that complement each other without replacing one another. Lightning protection safely conducts the energy of a direct strike into the ground. Surge protection protects the electrical installation against the voltage spikes that still remain on the grid afterward or are induced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lightning protection system consists of air-termination devices at high points, a network of conductors, and a proper earth connection. The purpose is to safely conduct the current from a direct strike around the electrical installation into the ground. This protects the structure and reduces the risk of fire or mechanical damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surge protection works at a different level. Surge protection devices \u2014 also called SPDs \u2014 are placed in the distribution board or directly at the luminaire. They clamp voltage spikes entering via the power line, even when there is no direct strike. Both measures are necessary: lightning protection without surge protection leaves electronics unprotected, and surge protection alone is insufficient in the event of a direct strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which security measures effectively protect LED fixtures?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good protection requires a layered approach, both at the installation level and the luminaire level. The measures below together provide the most robust security:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><strong>SPD on the main distribution board:<\/strong> Installs a first protective layer for the entire installation, class I or II depending on the lightning risk.<\/li>\n <li><strong>SPD on the sub-distribution board or lighting column:<\/strong> Specifically protects the lighting circuits closer to the fixtures.<\/li>\n <li><strong>Grounded metal cable trays and conduits:<\/strong> Reduce inductive coupling of lightning energy to the power cables.<\/li>\n <li><strong>Good equipotential bonding:<\/strong> Connect all metal structures, masts and luminaire housings to the same earth potential, so that voltage differences are minimized.<\/li>\n <li><strong>Luminaires with integrated surge protection:<\/strong> LED drivers with integrated SPD offer a last line of defence directly at the point where the electronic components are located.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The combination of network-level security and luminaire-based protection is essential. An SPD in the distribution board absorbs major surges, but residual energy can still cause damage to sensitive LED drivers. Luminaires with built-in protection therefore add a critical extra layer, particularly in locations with long cable runs such as port areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is the replacement of fixtures necessary after a lightning strike?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Replacement is necessary when a luminaire fails to start after a lightning strike, is visibly damaged, or exhibits erratic behavior such as flickering or reduced light output. But take note: luminaires that look intact on the outside can also be internally damaged and still fail in the short term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a severe impact, it is advisable to carry out a systematic inspection. Check each luminaire for the following points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li>Does the luminaire start up normally after power is restored?<\/li>\n <li>Is the light output uniform or are dark zones visible?<\/li>\n <li>Does the fixture show flickering, color change, or irregular dimming?<\/li>\n <li>Are the housing, cable entries, or connectors visibly damaged or melted?<\/li>\n <li>Does the driver give an error message or is the thermal protection active?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fixtures showing one or more of these symptoms must be replaced. It is unwise to leave damaged drivers in place in the hope that they will last a little longer: a partially damaged driver has a greatly increased risk of fire or premature failure at an inconvenient time, such as in the middle of a night-time transshipment operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you choose lighting fixtures that are resistant to voltage spikes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basis is simple: choose LED luminaires with built-in surge protection of at least 10 kV, a robust IP and IK protection rating suited to the environment, and drivers that comply with the relevant EMC standards. Specifically ask the manufacturer for the surge protection rating of the driver, as this information is not always prominent in the standard product specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When selecting luminaires for terminals and maritime environments, the following criteria are decisive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n <li><strong>Surge protection of the driver:<\/strong> Minimum 10 kV line-to-earth and 6 kV line-to-line for outdoor applications on terminals.<\/li>\n <li><strong>IP rating<\/strong> Minimum IP66 for outdoor installations, IP67 or IP68 for locations with direct water exposure or high-pressure washing. Therefore, always consult a specialist when designing lighting systems for risk-sensitive locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case Study: DFDS Terminal Lighting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A concrete example of how the theory works out in practice is the project for DFDS, a large Scandinavian shipping company with a busy terminal in Vlaardingen.
