Sports fields, whether soccer, tennis or field hockey fields, require a certain lux value and, above all, good light distribution (uniformity). An unevenly lit field leads to reduced playing experience, higher risk of injuries and dissatisfied players. Modern LED fixtures must therefore not only provide a lot of light, but also distribute it evenly across the field.
Specific standards apply to sports lighting, such as EN 12193 (for sports facilities) and any guidelines issued by sports associations (KNVB, KNLTB, etc.). These rules describe the minimum number of lux, the uniformity factor and color rendering (CRI). In addition, light nuisance to the surroundings can be a concern, especially if the sports field is located in a residential area or adjacent to natural areas (NSVV guidelines).
The fixtures on sports fields are often on tall masts (up to 15-25 m). They are exposed to strong gusts of wind, precipitation and temperature changes. Severe weather requires high IP and IK ratings, plus sturdy mounting brackets and corrosion-resistant coatings. Only rugged LED systems with strong thermal management perform long-term under these conditions.
Lighting is often the biggest expense when operating a sports field. Old (metal) halide lamps or suboptimal LED solutions sometimes consume unnecessary energy and require expensive maintenance. Modern LED luminaires with high lumen/W ratio and long-life components can reduce those costs by as much as 50-70%.

The KNVB often requires 75 lux for training and 200 lux for matches on amateur fields (depending on the league), and more for semi-pro. For hockey, the KNHB standard is 200 to 300 lux. We take your specific sports association requirements into account.

For sports, the CRI Ra usually needs to be ≥70-80 to follow the game properly. For higher classifications or television coverage, it can be 80-90. We offer luminaires that more than meet these values.
The lifetime of the LEDs is exceptionally long with as many as 196,000 hours L80B10, which means that after 40 years of use it has lost only 10% in brightness. More important for the lifetime is the driver, of which the lifetime is typically 100,000 hours, depending on the type. Yes, our systems are dimmable. This allows you to easily reduce the power in the evenings or during amateur training sessions and save even more energy.
LED luminaires are often brighter than traditional lights, but we always recommend checking mast strength and stability for new luminaires. If in doubt, we recommend a mast calculation or replacement.
Certainly, we have experience with both outdoor sports field lighting and indoor. In both cases, we provide the right lux, evenness and CRI values, and reduce glare for players and audience.
We recommend that you have this done by us, as this work is specialized. In exceptional cases, we are ready to cooperate and then provide all the necessary drawings, specifications and support. This allows your installer to complete the job efficiently and professionally.
