PROJECT CASE

Complete terminal lighting for BUSS Terminal Eemshaven

A complete terminal lighting and mast infrastructure project for a heavy offshore wind terminal, designed around operational performance, environmental awareness, and long-term reliability.

PROJECT CONTEXT

A complete lighting system for a strategic offshore wind terminal

BUSS Terminal Eemshaven needed more than a standard upgrade of its site lighting. The project involved the complete design and realization of a large-scale terminal lighting system for a demanding operational environment used for offshore wind logistics and heavy port activities.

From the initial lighting inquiry, the project was approached as a complete technical system. The final scope included lighting design, assessment of light pollution and environmental impact, mast positioning, geotechnical investigation, foundation engineering, civil works, power infrastructure, installation, and site integration of the full lighting system.

The terminal needed reliable lighting for large outdoor work areas, while also considering the environmental sensitivity of the surroundings. Because of its location near the Wadden Sea area, the design had to combine operational visibility with careful control of stray light, glare, and unwanted upward light.

For JEL Products, this project demonstrates exactly how terminal lighting should be approached: not as a standalone product delivery, but as a comprehensive infrastructure system in which lighting performance, mast engineering, installation conditions, and environmental impacts are all interconnected.

THE CHALLENGE

Combine terminal performance with dark-sky constraints

The terminal required sufficient lighting performance for safe and efficient operations over a large outdoor area. Simultaneously, the lighting system had to fit within the environmentally sensitive context of Eemshaven and the dark-sky sensitivity near the Wadden Sea area.

This was not a matter of simply installing powerful LED spotlights. Mast positions, mounting heights, optical light distribution, aiming angles, stray light, glare control, cable routes, power distribution, and future maintenance access had to be assessed as a whole.

A terminal lighting design only performs well when the complete system is adapted to the actual site conditions. The required lighting levels at the terminal had to be achieved without unnecessary light pollution or uncontrolled light spill into the surrounding environment.

This made the project technically demanding. The lighting had to support the operation, but the solution also had to remain responsible in relation to the surrounding landscape, environmental constraints, and the long-term operation of the terminal.

CURRENT SITUATION

From lighting question to complete infrastructure project

The project began with a lighting issue but rapidly expanded to encompass a full terminal infrastructure scope. To develop a dependable and practical solution, the project couldn't be restricted to just the light fixtures.

The full installation required a complete chain of work: site investigation, foundation concept, deep driven support structures, trenching for power cables, reinstatement of paved areas, connection to main distribution equipment, assembly of 50-meter lighting masts, installation of the luminaires, and technical integration on site.

The project also included pre-wiring for camera systems, allowing the lighting mast infrastructure to support more than just illumination. This made the masts part of a broader terminal infrastructure concept.

This approach reduced fragmentation between design, supply, and installation. Instead of treating each element separately, JEL Products coordinated the lighting system as one integrated project.

OUR ENGINEERING-FIRST APPROACH

First the environment, then the system, then the product

JEL Products designed the terminal lighting concept based on the operational realities of the site. The design process took into account the lighting performance requirements at the terminal, the site layout, mast positions, foundation requirements, cable routes, environmental constraints, and long-term maintenance conditions.

The context-sensitive lighting design was a key component of the project. Given the terminal’s location near the Wadden Sea region, the lighting concept had to minimize unnecessary light spill and prevent irresponsible upward light. This required careful selection of optics, beam angles, and pole positions.

The mast infrastructure was also an essential part of the engineering. The 50-meter light masts required a foundation concept suitable for the local soil conditions. This included geotechnical investigation and foundation work with 12-meter deep foundation piles.

The final solution was therefore not based on luminaires alone. It was a complete terminal lighting system in which civil engineering, electrical infrastructure, mast construction, environmentally oriented lighting design, and industrial LED lighting had to function together.

Scope Van Jel Products

From research and foundations to installation and handover

JEL Products supplied all the equipment required for the terminal lighting system.

Environmentally oriented lighting design

JEL Products designed the lighting concept based on the required illuminance levels in the terminal, the operational layout of the site, mast positions, and environmental constraints. The design focused on providing functional lighting in the work area, controlled light distribution, and a harmonious integration into the surroundings.

Geotechnical investigation and foundation work

The project involved soil investigation and foundation engineering for the 50-meter lighting poles. The foundation concept consisted of 12-meter deep foundation piles to create a stable base for the pole structures.

Mast and installation

The 50-meter light masts have been assembled and installed on site as part of the complete project execution. This included the installation of the mast structures, fixtures, and associated electrical components.

Light Measurement and Verification

The project included verification of the lighting installation to assess whether the system met the design and functional requirements of the terminal. This involved examining the lighting performance on site and the practical operation of the installation after completion.

Nutrition infrastructure

The project included the necessary cable infrastructure and connection work for the terminal lighting system. This consisted of cable routes, power cables, and connection to the main distribution boards, among other things.

Project Coordination

The project required coordination between engineering, civil works, electrical installation, mast construction, and terminal operations. JEL Products coordinated the entire lighting scope, from the technical concept through to the final installation.

SOLUTION AND RESULT

A complete terminal installation, designed for reliability

JEL Products supplied all the equipment required for the terminal lighting system. The final solution included the supply and installation of poles, foundations, electrical infrastructure, luminaires, and related work to bring the entire design online.

The result was a complete terminal lighting installation, designed around operational performance, environmental impact control, and long-term maintainability.

The lighting system supports terminal operations with high-mounted industrial LED fixtures, technically substantiated pole positions, and controlled light distribution. By using 50-meter light poles, large work areas can be illuminated from fewer elevated positions. This limits unnecessary obstacles on the terminal site and supports a clear operational layout.

The project also reduced technical fragmentation. By combining lighting design, mast infrastructure, civil works, and electrical installation into one complete scope, the final result better aligned with the actual requirements of the location.

USED PRODUCT

DarkLicht 600 W Industrial LED Fixtures

The terminal lighting system is equipped with DarkLicht 600 W Industrial LED Fixtures. These fixtures have been selected for their suitability in demanding industrial outdoor environments where high light output, controlled light distribution, and long-term reliability are required.

For a terminal environment, the quality of the optical system is at least as important as the fixture’s output. The light must be effectively delivered to the terminal’s operational zones without causing unnecessary glare or uncontrolled stray light.

Of DarkLicht luminaires applied as part of a complete system design. Their performance had to work in conjunction with mast height, aiming strategy, terminal layout, and environmental constraints.

Within this project, the product was not the starting point. The operational environment, lighting requirements, and infrastructural constraints determined the solution. The fixtures were selected and configured to support that complete system.

Project-related questions

Terminal lighting must support operational safety, traffic movements, loading and unloading activities, storage areas, and maintenance access across large outdoor sites. The system's performance depends on pole positions, mounting height, optics, aiming, uniformity, glare control, and environmental constraints. This cannot be solved by simply selecting high-power luminaires.

High-mast lighting allows large operational areas to be illuminated from elevated positions. This limits the number of obstacles on the terminal site and keeps the site layout clearer. The final mast height should always be assessed in relation to the site layout, required light levels, foundation conditions, wind load, and maintenance strategy.

Eemshaven is located near the Wadden Sea area, an environmentally sensitive region. For lighting projects in this type of location, it is important to carefully control stray light, glare, and upward light. The lighting system must provide functional light for operations without unnecessarily affecting the surrounding environment.

No. For this project, JEL Products provided a comprehensive terminal lighting solution. This included lighting design, ambient lighting design, geotechnical surveys, foundation work, civil engineering work, power infrastructure, pole installation, system installation, DarkLicht 600 W luminaires, and preparation for camera integration.

For this project, DarkLicht 600 W industrial LED luminaires were used. These were selected as part of a complete high-mast terminal lighting system, where optical performance, reliability, and controlled light distribution were key requirements.
