Snapper LED floodlight

Compact lightweight floodlight for cranes, machinery, and marine applications. Optionally available in 316L stainless steel or as a high-temperature version up to +120 °C.

Developed for positions where mounting space and load capacity are limited, but demands remain undiminished. Available in aluminum and 316L, in AC and DC, with one of the best lumen-per-kilogram ratios in the market.

Response within 1 business day by an engineer. Free lighting calculation and trial luminaire possible.

Decision Aid

When should you choose the Snapper?

The luminaire is at its strongest where compactness, low weight, and reliable light output come together, on machines and structures where every kilogram counts.

  • Installation space or load capacity on the machine or structure is limited
  • High light output per kilo is the main requirement: 31,000 lumens from 3.1 kg
  • The luminaire must withstand continuous vibrations, weather conditions, and industrial use.
  • The light beam must be adjusted per position, with six optics and combinations
  • AC and DC occur within a single fleet
  • The environment is corrosive or reaches +120 °C

When another luminaire fits better

The Snapper is not intended for every task. Being clear about its limitations leads to a better end result.

  • Need more output or range per luminaire: then the Barracuda or the Shark
  • A maximum impact resistance rating of IK10 is a strict requirement; the Snapper has an IK08 rating: then the Marlin
  • One luminaire must span a large area or high mast position: then the Orca
  • Complete light blocking against light pollution is required: then DarkLicht
  • ATEX or Ex certification is required
  • A standard indoor luminaire for light applications will suffice
Versions

Four versions

Aluminum, 316L, high-temperature, or quantum-sealed: the differences lie in the material, the temperature limit, and the power supply. The same size delivers more output with the Snapper HC, up to 83,000 lumens.

Optics

Optics and measured beam angles

The aluminum Snapper uses six off-the-shelf optics, while the 316L versions use the JEL optics set. Below are the angles from our own IES library, with the optics name listed next to them as the order code. An optic name is not a measured value: the 69° optic measures 72°. If you are unsure between two angles, we will support your choice with a free lighting calculation.

The beam angle is the full angle between the directions in which the intensity has dropped to 50 % of the peak; the field angle is 10 %. Combinations of optics within a single luminaire are possible; the aluminum version is also available with the asymmetric 20° × 50° and 20° × 85° optics. Optics that have not yet been measured are listed with their nominal values.

Mounting

Video editing software

On cranes and machinery, the mounting method determines whether a light luminaire will last its full service life. That is why the Snapper is available with application-specific brackets and is built directly into the boom on mobile tower cranes.

The DRB-1 driver box goes directly on the back of the luminaire. One compact unit, without a separate driver position in the housing. Also available in 316L for the stainless steel version.

Boom installation

On mobile tower cranes, the Snapper is built directly into the boom structure due to its size and weight, protecting it from collisions and vandalism.

DRB-1 driver box

Takes the remote BLD240 or BLD075 driver, on the mast, in the boom or on the back of the luminaire with the rear mount bracket.

A fall protection cable is optionally available and is often a strict requirement when installed above a work area. The DRB-1 driver box houses the remote driver and is mounted directly behind the luminaire using the rear mount bracket. The Crane Light Stabilizer has its own product page. For tower cranes see also Tower crane lighting.

High temperature

The HT version operates at temperatures up to +120 °C

Where standard LED luminaires fail due to heat, the Snapper HT continues to operate: 35 W and 7,000 lumens at ambient temperatures up to +120 °C, with additional thermal protection and impact-resistant glass or borosilicate glass.

The driver remains outside the hot zone: a 25-meter-long SiHF-OB cable bridges the distance to the BLD075, which fits inside the DRB-1 driver box. Optionally available in a 316L housing, or quantum-sealed for hot and chemically aggressive processes. The DC version operates up to +110 °C.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your question not listed, or would you like something calculated? An engineer will respond within 1 business day.

No. The Snapper is a compact industrial floodlight: designed for applications where a full-size floodlight is needed, but weight and mounting space are limited. For local work lighting on a machine, the Piranha and the Goby are the logical choices.

The Marlin has a more robust design, is IK10-rated, and weighs 5.5 kg with an output of 18,000 lm. The Barracuda delivers 44,100 lm from a unit weighing 10.1 kg and offers the widest range of mounting options. The Snapper HC combines multiple Snapper units into a single floodlight ranging from 270 to 500 W and up to 83,000 lm, designed for harbor and STS cranes. The Snapper itself is the choice for maximum lumens per kilogram: 31,000 lm from 3.1 kg.

For the AC version with the BLD240 driver: 3 on a B16, 6 on a C16, 9 on a C25, and 10 on a D16. For the HT with the BLD075: 11, 19, 30, and 32. These numbers come from the manufacturer's MCB table at 220 V, calculated using ABB S200, and apply per driver. This is a guideline for the engineering phase and is not a replacement for the installation calculation.

Yes. The AC versions are dimmable via 0–10 V, PWM, and DALI-2, and can also be configured via NFC. With the DC version, dimming is customized because a constant current is used there.

That depends on the mounting height, desired illuminance, the shape of the work zone, and the operator's line of sight. There is no rule of thumb that determines this adequately. We substantiate it with a lighting calculation, which also specifies the number of luminaires, the positioning, and the expected lux levels. The datasheet shows the measured angle, not the optic name: the 30° optic measures a 29° beam angle and a 73° field angle.

For most machine and crane locations, yes: IK08 with impact-resistant glass can withstand normal industrial use, tools, and stone chips. If maximum impact resistance (IK10) is a strict requirement, for example, where collisions or falling loads are a real risk, choose the Marlin or the Barracuda.

Yes. The aluminum housing contains less than 0.08 % of copper to minimize galvanic corrosion and features a two-layer titanium-based e-coating; the bracket is made of 316L as standard. This results in corrosion class C5 Industrial and Maritime. For aggressive chemicals or extremely salty water, the fully 316L version is available, with C5 and CX ratings, a PREN of approximately 24, and a 20-year warranty on the housing. For hot and chemically aggressive processes, there is the Quantum Sealed HT-CHEM.

The aluminum version is tested to IP66, IP67 and IP68, up to and including submersion. For high-pressure and high-temperature steam jet, IP69K, choose the 316L version: it is tested to all four classes.

The 360,000 hours is a TM-21 L90B05 value: at that point, at least 95 % of the luminaires will still be delivering at least 90 % of their initial light output. This is more stringent than the standard L70 and L80 specifications. In practice, the LED is rarely the limiting factor; environmental stress, temperature, corrosion, and installation quality determine the luminaire’s actual performance in the field.

Standard five years on the complete luminaire. For a 316L housing, twenty years applies to the housing itself and five years on everything else. The HT versions are rated for five years up to +120 °C with AC and up to +110 °C with DC; the quantum sealed HT-CHEM for three years up to +120 °C.

No. The luminaire is not intended for hazardous areas. If ATEX is a requirement, please discuss this in advance, and we will determine a suitable solution together.

Yes. The luminaire is supplied as a fixed component on cranes, machinery, and equipment. For series production, we tailor the optics, voltage version, color temperature, and mounting accessory to the machine architecture.

CE, IEC 60598, EN 55015, EN 61547 and the EMC Directive. IEC 60598 covers construction, electrical safety, and thermal behavior. In addition, the luminaire helps meet EN 12464-2 for the safe lighting of industrial outdoor workplaces. Configurations for North America are available upon request.
