At sea, every replacement is a major operation: it requires a work permit, downtime, and sometimes a boom lift that is not even there. That shifts the priority from the purchase price to material quality and lifespan. We provide work lighting for workboats, offshore installations, and quayside maritime operations, made of solid 316L where the location demands it.
1,007 hours
salt spray testing according to ISO 9227, with the test duration stated on the datasheet
20 years
warranty on the 316L housing, brackets, and fastening in the same material class
No
DNV or ABS type approval and no ATEX: we state that upfront, not in week three
Bokalift 2, Boskalis: the complete lighting concept for deck and crane redesigned
| what we encounter | what did it cost you | what it is about |
|---|---|---|
| LED is already installed, but the work area falls into shadow | Working by intuition where precision is required | optics choice and overlap |
| Brackets and bolts are made of a different material than the housing | A galvanic couple that eats the fastener before the fixture | material class overall |
| A defect is only resolved at the port | Working with a dark position, or working with a construction lamp and an extension cord across the deck | lifespan, spare parts, and interchangeability |
| Light shining onto the bridge | The watch switches off fixtures and afterwards the deck is dark | shielding and zoning |
| The terminal box is the only part not made of stainless steel | The installation fails on the cheapest part | distribution and cabinets in 316L |
| Design factor | What is going on here | What determines it in the design |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion | Seawater, permanent salt spray and condensation. This is the most severe classification that exists, CX according to ISO 12944-2 | Solid 316L, identical material for bolt, bracket, and housing to prevent galvanic corrosion, seals and lead-throughs, salt spray test with test duration in accordance with ISO 9227 |
| In-flight catering | 24 V DC alongside 230 and 400 V AC, generator voltage jumping when loads are switched on | Voltage range and protection per system, separate groups, behavior during voltage dip |
| Distribution and cupboards | The terminal box and the distribution board are located in the same wet position as the luminaire. | Distribution and terminal boxes in 316L, ensuring the installation doesn't fail on the cheapest component |
| Vibration and shock | Main engines, wave action, hoisting work and crane operations | Confirmation and retention, vibration testing, cable strain relief |
| Glare toward bridge and deck | Navigation must not be disrupted and the deck crew works below the fixture | Shielding and direction, switchability per zone, separate treatment of work surface and walking area |
| Offshore maintenance | No supplier within reach, and a defect is only resolved in the port | Spare parts on board, position interchangeability, on-board documentation |
| Certification | Type approval by DNV or ABS is not available in-house, nor is ATEX. | What is demonstrable: material, salt spray test with test duration, and the on-board reference |
The reference values per work area, from 100 lux on stairs and walkways to 300 lux on a drill floor, are on the page regarding that topic. Regarding material choice and corrosion classes, there is a dedicated page that goes much further than what fits here.

Offshore heavy-lift vessel · Boskalis
An offshore heavy-lift vessel carrying well-known brand LED lighting still had insufficient deck illumination: spotlights cast the work area into shadow at working heights up to 125 meters above deck and in widely varying setups. JEL redesigned the complete lighting concept for the deck and crane instead of just replacing fixtures.

The 316L line is also installed at the P&O ferry terminal in Europoort and at the BUSS Terminal Eemshaven.

No. We provide material, salt spray testing with test duration, and onboard references. Where class approval is a hard requirement, we are not the right supplier.
No, not at this moment.
Complete for five years, and up to twenty years on a 316L enclosure.
Standard versions from Nijkerk, project executions upon consultation.
We supply the design, fixtures, and technical support; the installation work is done by the shipyard or your own technical department.
To be discussed, depending on where the ship is located.
Send us the vessel type or installation, the positions that need to be illuminated, and the operations for which it is used. You will receive a lighting design per work arrangement including the material selection per position.
