DarkLight LED Flat spotlight

Full cut-off flat floodlight without light pollution: up to 307,800 lumens from a single fixture, 171 lm/W, DarkSky and NSVV compliant.

The DarkLicht is the flagship of our glare-free lighting line and offers a fundamentally different approach to landscape lighting. Whereas traditional floodlights always lose some of their light to glare and stray light due to their lenses, the DarkLicht’s patented parabolic reflector directs all of the light precisely onto the surface to be illuminated. Above the adjustable cutoff—from 63° to 75°—there is zero light emission, both in front and behind. The result: maximum visibility of the terrain, no light pollution for nearby residents, traffic, or wildlife, and a net efficiency of 171 lm/W.

The product line includes three models: the DL1 (320–600 W, up to 102,600 lumens), the DL2 (800–1,200 W, up to 205,200 lumens), and the DL3 (1,800 W, 307,800 lumens)—together covering every scale of outdoor lighting, from construction sites to port terminals and sports stadiums. Square reflector modules rotate 90° in both directions for adjustable light distribution, and with color temperatures ranging from 1,800 K to 5,000 K, the installation meets even the strictest DarkSky specifications if desired. Clients such as DFDS, BUSS Ports, P&O Ferries, and RKAV Volendam have already chosen the DarkLicht.

When should you choose the DarkLicht?

The DarkLicht is designed for large-scale lighting projects where both light quality and the surrounding environment must be taken seriously. The fixture is at its best where a lot of light is needed on-site, but no light is allowed to escape beyond the site—and where a permit, regulation, or the surrounding environment requires it.

The DarkLicht is a logical choice when:

When is the DarkLicht not the right choice?

The DarkLicht is not intended for every lighting application. It is precisely by being clear about this that we can provide better advice and achieve a better end result.

The DarkLicht is usually not the right choice when:

Variations of the DarkLicht

54,700 - 102,600 lumens

The entry-level models in the large DarkLicht series: 320, 400, or 600 W (54,700 – 102,600 lumens). The 320- and 400-W models feature an internal driver; the 600-W model uses an external driver and is also available in a 24V DC version. For medium-sized areas, construction sites, and sports fields.

136,800 - 205,200 lumens

The workhorse for large-scale site lighting: 800 or 1200 W (136,800 – 205,200 lumens) with external driver in a DRB driver box. The choice for port terminals, large sports facilities, and industrial sites from high masts.

307,800 lumens

The most powerful full cut-off floodlight we offer: 1800 W and 307,800 lumens from a single fixture. For the largest areas and high-mast applications, where one DL3 replaces multiple classic floodlights — without a single lumen of stray light.

For every tower crane

Designed specifically for construction cranes: the hot-dip galvanized DL-CCB-400+DIS crane frame with a robust pin system, compatible with all brands of tower cranes. It supports and carries up to four DarkLicht assemblies, including distribution, and is stackable for transport and storage.

More than a fixture: a complete lighting system

The DarkLicht owes its performance not only to its patented reflector, but also to the system surrounding it. Especially in large installations, the power supply, mounting, and configuration determine the final result.

That is why we supply the DarkLicht as a complete system:

  • DRB-driverbox – external driver mounting in an industrial IP67 box (DRB-1 up to 200 W, DRB-2 up to 2000 W), keeping the electronics accessible and the luminaires lightweight;
  • Tower crane frame DL-CCB-400+DIS – hot-dip galvanized frame with pin system for all crane brands, including distribution for four fixtures. Also see our page tower crane lighting;
  • Mast and assembly solutions – from fixed masts to mobile setups, adapted to mounting height and cut-off. Also see light poles & high mast;
  • Lighting Design & Calculation – Every DarkLicht installation is supported by a lighting calculation, including a light pollution assessment for the NSVV or for the purpose of obtaining a permit.

Typical Applications of the DarkLicht

The DarkLicht is particularly effective in situations where a lot of light is needed on-site, but no light should escape beyond the site boundaries. From inner-city construction sites to port terminals: the light stays within the site boundaries.

Tower cranes and construction sites

Using the DL-CCB-400+DIS crane frame, the DarkLicht illuminates the entire construction site from the crane boom—in compliance with DarkSky regulations, as at the HSB construction site in Hilversum. No complaints from the neighborhood, yet a full view of the work.

Construction and infrastructure

While the NSVV Light Pollution Guideline and the environmental permit set the framework, the DarkLicht determines whether or not operations may continue. Fully shielded light, dimmable for nighttime operations.

Harbors and terminals

At DFDS in Vlaardingen, the switch to DarkLicht 53% resulted in energy savings: the terminal was lit, while the surrounding area was completely dark. BUSS Terminal Eemshaven and P&O Ferries also opted for this approach.

Sports Fields and Stadiums

For sports facilities that want to minimize disruption to nearby residents and the natural environment, such as RKAV Volendam. Uniform game lighting on the field, no light spill into the neighborhood—with 2200K amber lighting near the nature reserve, if desired.

Technical core specifications

The DarkLicht is available in three sizes. Below are the key specifications for each model: the DL1 (320–600 W), the DL2 (800–1200 W), and the DL3 (1800 W). All models share the same reflector technology, 171 lm/W, and field-adjustable cutoff.

DRB-driverboxes for external driver mounting

Starting with the DL1-600, the DarkLicht uses external drivers mounted in our industrial DRB driver boxes. The DRB-1 (up to 200 W) and DRB-2 (up to 2000 W) are constructed from the same aluminum alloy with a titanium e-coating as the luminaires: IP67-sealed (IP68 available), IK08 impact-resistant, with a driver lifespan of 100,000 hours and a power factor >0.95. External mounting keeps the luminaires lightweight and the electronics accessible for service, while keeping the heat from the driver and the LED separated. A single DRB-2 can power up to four DarkLicht luminaires.

The cut-off reflector ensures light is directed to the right place

The DarkLicht isn’t chosen based on lumens alone, but on what happens with that light. The cutoff angle determines the forward beam and where the light ends: 75° for low mounting, 72° as the standard setting with the best balance, 69° for maximum uniformity, 66° for extreme heights above 50 meters, and 63° for the strictest DarkSky zones in combination with 1700K. Because the reflector modules can be rotated 90° in both directions, the light distribution can be adjusted for each position. This creates a light pattern that ends exactly at the property line.

Lighting application and design

Not every application requires the same lighting design. Especially for outdoor areas, terminals, and sports fields, mast height, cut-off selection, and positioning determine both the final result and the glare assessment. For projects where this must be demonstrably substantiated, JEL Products provides a customized lighting calculation, including the number of fixtures, their positions, expected illuminance levels in lux, and compliance with the NSVV Light Pollution Guidelines or the environmental permit.

Frequently Asked Questions About the DarkLicht

Product Positioning & Choice

The difference lies in the light control. A traditional floodlight uses lenses or open optics, which means that some of the light is always lost as glare and scattered light. The DarkLicht uses patented parabolic reflectors: above the adjustable cutoff, light emission is zero, both at the front and the rear. All the light effectively reaches the area being illuminated—which is why fewer fixtures are often needed to achieve the same level of illumination.

The DarkLicht M is a glare-free floodlight for machinery, cranes, and mobile light towers: 150–300 W, up to 51,300 lumens, IP69K, and low-voltage options. The large DarkLicht is the fixed floodlight for site and mast lighting: 320–1,800 W and up to 307,800 lumens per fixture, with external drivers in DRB boxes.

The DarkLicht D is a simple outdoor floodlight (60–200 W, up to 34,200 lumens) with an internal driver—designed for parking lots and standard outdoor areas. The larger DarkLicht picks up where the D leaves off: larger areas, taller poles, and power ratings up to 1,800 W, supplied as a complete system with driver boxes and lighting calculations.

Yes. Thanks to the full cut-off reflector, upward light emission is zero, which means that the DarkLicht meets the strictest DarkSky specifications—including DS-1—at low color temperatures (2200K or 1800K). With proper lighting design, the limits set by the NSVV Light Pollution Guideline are also met in virtually all classes—even at high power levels. We substantiate this for each project with a lighting calculation.

Yes. Sports facilities are a core application: uniform competition lighting on the field without stray light towards residents or nature, as realized at RKAV Volendam. For match visibility, 4000-5000K is often chosen; near a nature reserve, 2200K amber is possible.

Lenshoek & light calculation

The correct cut-off angle depends on the mounting height, the size of the site, and the sensitivity of the surrounding area. As a rule of thumb: 75° for low mounting, 72° as standard, 69° for maximum uniformity, 66° from extreme heights (>50 m), and 63° in the strictest DarkSky zones. The final choice is supported by a lighting calculation; JEL Products will perform this for you, including the number of fixtures, their positions, and expected illuminance levels in lux.

Certification & Standards

The DarkLicht is certified in accordance with CE and IEC 60598. In addition, the luminaire is designed to comply with the NSVV Light Pollution Directive and—at low color temperatures—with the most stringent DarkSky specifications, including DS-1. For workplace lighting, the DarkLicht supports compliance with EN 12464-2. For specific project requirements, JEL Products can assess the certification status on a per-application basis.

Protection & Environmental Resistance

Yes. The aluminum alloy housing contains less than 0.08% of copper to minimize galvanic corrosion and is coated with a two-layer titanium-based e-coating; the bracket is made of high-tensile 316L stainless steel. This makes the DarkLicht suitable for ports, coastal locations, and industrial sites. For extremely corrosive environments, 316L stainless steel versions are available within the DarkLicht family—ask us about the options for each model.

Yes. The DarkLicht is IP67-rated and therefore completely dust- and waterproof for permanent outdoor use, with thermally toughened glass on the front and IK07 impact resistance. Periodic cleaning with a soft cloth or a low-pressure water jet is sufficient; the reflector itself is protected behind the glass.

No, the DarkLicht is not currently ATEX-certified. The fixture is not intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Zone 1, Zone 2, or similar). For applications where ATEX certification is required, we recommend discussing this with us in advance so that a suitable solution can be determined.

Copper in aluminum alloys accelerates galvanic corrosion when the aluminum comes into contact with stainless steel or seawater. By deliberately keeping the copper content below 0.08%, this corrosion chain is interrupted. In combination with the 316L stainless steel bracket and the titanium-based e-coating, the fixture retains its structural integrity even during prolonged exposure to salty or corrosive environments.

Vibration & mechanical stress

Yes. For tower cranes, we supply the hot-dip galvanized DL-CCB-400+DIS crane frame with a robust bracket system, compatible with all brands—including distribution for four light fixtures. The DarkLicht is also widely used on mobile masts and temporary frames, for example at inner-city construction sites where the light must remain within the construction fences.

Maintenance & longevity

The DarkLicht requires minimal maintenance. The luminaires themselves have no consumable parts; the external drivers in the DRB boxes are separately accessible and replaceable without disassembling the luminaire—a major advantage on tall poles. The recommended inspection is limited to periodically cleaning the glass and checking the mounting and cable entries.

The specified service life of 196,000 hours is an L80B10 value: at that point, the 90% luminaires will still be delivering at least 80% of their initial light output. At 4,000 operating hours per year—which is typical for outdoor lighting—that amounts to nearly 50 years; in practice, the driver (100,000 hours) is the first component to require service and is therefore located in the accessible external DRB box. The standard warranty is 5 years, extendable to 10 years.

Electrical connection & control

The DarkLicht operates at 180–528 VAC and is therefore intended for phase-to-phase and high-voltage connections; a 250–740 VDC version is available as an option, and the DL1-600 is also available in a 24 V DC version. The DL1-320 and DL1-400 have an internal driver; the larger models use external drivers housed in a DRB driver box, ensuring that the electronics remain accessible for service.

Yes. The DarkLicht is dimmable via 0-10V as standard and is optionally available with DALI. This makes it easy to set up night modes, schedules, and integration with sensors or a management system—a common way to further reduce energy consumption and minimize disturbances outside of operating hours.

OEM & Customization

Yes — this is actually the standard procedure. Every DarkLicht installation is supported by JEL Products with a lighting calculation: number of fixtures, positions, cut-off settings, expected illuminance levels in lux, and compliance with NSVV Light Pollution regulations or the environmental permit. This way, you know in advance how the installation will perform—both on-site and beyond.

The complete dimensions, including mounting pattern and bracket cross-sections, are included in the product datasheet. Product dimensions: DL1 365 x 550 x 160 mm, DL2 635 x 550 x 160 mm, DL3 905 x 550 x 160 mm; the bracket is made of high-tensile 316L stainless steel. For project-specific installation, we also supply the tower crane frame and mast solutions.
