Manta LED canopy light

One canopy shape for every canopy: 22,400 lumens at 224 lm/W, dimmable with 0-10V, PWM, DALI-2, or NFC.

Available as a recessed or surface-mounted fixture, and as a 21-mm-thick retrofit panel that fits perfectly into an existing CREE 304 mounting location. New is the Manta HT: the same design, built for environments up to +120 °C, for drying tunnels, steam-cleaning car washes, and hot process rooms where no ceiling fixture was previously available.

Decision Aid

When do you choose the Manta

This is a light fixture designed to be mounted underneath something: an awning, a ceiling, or a canopy. It doesn't illuminate an outdoor area but rather a living space.

  • A gas station, a canopy, or a covered outdoor area should be lit from the ceiling
  • Replace existing canopy lights, specifically the CREE 304
  • Both surface-mount and flush-mount installations are required within a single project, from the same product line
  • Efficiency matters: 224 lm/W is the highest efficiency in our product line
  • The power per position must vary: 10 to 100 W adjustable via NFC
  • The ambient temperature is warm: the HT version operates up to +120 °C
  • The position is difficult to reach and every lamp replacement requires an aerial work platform

When another luminaire fits better

As soon as there is nothing above the fixture, or as soon as a distance needs to be bridged, a floodlight or a vlakstraler is the more logical choice.

  • If it must be illuminated close to a machine or vehicle: then a work light
  • It is about a larger open work zone: than a floodlight
  • Light pollution must be actively limited: then a DarkLicht-solution
  • It is about a facade: then the DarkLicht WP wallpack
  • A decorative or architectural luminaire is more important than robustness
  • ATEX or Ex-certification is required; see the question about zoning at petrol stations
Versions

Six versions, the same 380 by 380 millimeters

All versions share the same square dimension; what differs is the installation depth, the weight, and in the case of the HT, the entire thermal design. In the standard versions, the driver is located internally, while in the HT it is external, outside of the hot zone.

Dimming by position

The light level is controlled via 0-10 V, PWM, or DALI-2, and,via NFC,also using a phone or programming box, without opening the fixture or disconnecting the power. For a canopy with multiple zones, you can set a different light level for each position and adjust them later if the layout changes: a position above the pumps can be set higher than one above the passageway.

With the standard versions, the driver is internal and the fixture operates directly from 90 to 305 volts. With the HT, the driver is external and remains outside the hot zone: drivers are more sensitive to heat than the LED module itself, and this makes maintenance possible without entering the hot room. We will calculate your canopy free of charge: see lighting advice and lighting calculation.

Optics

Beam angles and light distribution

Under a canopy, the beam angle determines whether the edge of the canopy still receives light. The standard models are available with 30°, 60°, or 120° angles; the HT model has a fixed 120° angle. If you’re unsure between two angles, we’ll help you make the right choice with a free lighting calculation.

Light pattern of the 30-degree beam from the Manta canopy light

30° beam

Directed beam for a high canopy or a narrow passageway. All three recessed depths share the same optical platform and photometry.

Light pattern of the 60-degree beam from the Manta canopy light

60° beam

The center distribution for most awnings: even, with no bright spot in view.

Light pattern of the 120-degree ultra-wide beam of the Manta canopy light, as well as the fixed distribution of the HT

120° extra-wide

Wide distribution for low canopies and covered walkways, and the fixed distribution of the HT version.

OpticsLuminous fluxVersionApplication
30°20,600 lmstandardDirected beam, 36° beam angle and 58° field angle. High canopies and narrow zones, with optics approx. 206 lm/W.
60°20,600 lmstandardCenter divider, the standard choice under a gas station canopy.
120°20,600 lmstandardVery wide, for low awnings and close positions.
Without optics22,400 lmstandardThe standard version: 136° beam angle and 168° field angle, the luminous flux of the light engine itself at 224 lm/W.
120°, fixed, HT14,400 lmHTNo lenses possible: the housing is too shallow to wear any.

The light engine has a luminous flux of 22,400 lumens; 20,600 lumens is the output with optics; each lens reduces the light output. As a result, the efficiency ranges from 224 lm/W without specific optics to approximately 206 lm/W with optics. We base our calculations on the value corresponding to your chosen optics. With the HT model, lenses are not possible due to the high temperatures.

Retrofit

The existing hole, without demolition work

The CREE 304 is used worldwide and hangs at thousands of service stations. Anyone replacing that installation normally runs into the same problem: the new luminaire does not fit into the existing cutout, which leaves you stuck with demolition work, new cabling, and a second visit.

The Manta Surface Extended is designed for just that: 118 mm deep, 5.4 kg, and it fits into an existing CREE 304 cutout. No new cutout, no new wiring.

No demolition workThe panel fits into the existing cutout, so the ceiling of the canopy remains closed and no repair work is required.
No new cablingThe existing connection will remain in use. That not only saves material, but above all a second visit from the installer.
Minimal downtime per canopyFor a chain with many locations, that counts double: every position that remains closed longer than necessary costs revenue.
Dimmable per positionDimming via 0-10V, PWM, DALI-2 or NFC, even after the panel is installed. A position above the pumps can be set higher than a position above the drive-through.

Manta HT

A canopy that can withstand +120 degrees

Until now, ceiling fixtures were rarely installed in drying tunnels or steam-cleaning car washes, simply because none existed that could withstand the conditions. The Manta HT has the same shape and the same 380 by 380 millimeter dimensions, but a different thermal design: chemically tempered glass or borosilicate on the front, a 5-meter heat-resistant SiHF-OB silicone cable, and an external driver that remains outside the hot zone.

In heat, lifespan is not a number but a curve, and we prefer to write that down rather than name a single value. Next to this is the specification per ambient temperature, measured according to TM-21 and reported as L90B05, equal to the rest of the program.

Watch out for the HT

Due to the high temperatures, lenses are not possible: the HT has a single beam angle of 120 degrees, very wide, with a field angle of 168 degrees. If you want a narrower beam in a hot zone, a floodlight from the high-temperature line the correct route.

Applications

Wherever people are standing waiting under a roof

A canopy does not illuminate an area but rather a place to stay. People stand there quietly, look up, and subconsciously assess whether it feels safe. This imposes different requirements than outdoor lighting: the light must be even, with no bright source in view, and without a dark edge along the outer edge of the canopy.

Manta canopy lights illuminate a gas station canopy

Gas Stations

The core application, and the place where the CREE 304 is most frequently installed. High light output, neat ceiling integration, and years of reliable operation above an area where you cannot simply place a cherry picker.

Product rendering of the Manta canopy light, bottom view

Canopies and awnings

Covered outdoor areas where functional and uniform light is required in a dust- and waterproof design. Outdoor in terms of load capacity, indoor in terms of light distribution: wet and dirty, but out of direct rain.

Manta canopy light mounted in a gas station canopy

Service and loading zones

At fast chargers, people linger longer than at a fuel pump, often alone and in the dark. Good ceiling lighting directly determines how safe it feels here, and the power output per position can be adjusted to suit the zone.

Cleaning · IP69K
High-pressure jet

IP69K means completely dust- and waterproof, including cleaning with a high-pressure jet at close range. Under a canopy, that is not excessive: water and foam are used at a car wash or gas station, and the canopy hangs right in the middle of it. IK08 is the impact resistance of the front, made of diffuse chemically hardened glass or diffuse borosilicate.

Lifespan · TM-21
> 103,500 hours at +50 °C

L90B05 for standard models: at that point, at least 95 % of the fixtures will still deliver at least 90 % of their initial light output. For the HT model, the rated lifespan ranges from 360,000 hours at +50 °C to 51,400 hours at +120 °C.

Practice
CREE 304 positions

The Manta Surface Extended fits perfectly into an existing CREE 304 mounting position: no new cutout, no new wiring, and minimal downtime per location.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about the Manta

Can't find your question? Call us with the number of positions and the awning height at hand, and you will know what is needed within five minutes. An engineer will respond within 1 business day.

Yes. That’s what the Manta Surface Extended is designed for: the same 380 by 380 millimeters, 118 mm deep, and 5.4 kg, and it fits into an existing CREE 304 cutout. No new cutout, no new wiring. That’s where you save the most money on a retrofit, because if the awning ceiling can remain closed, there’s no need for cutting or breaking work—and no need for a second visit. The part number for this retrofit version is MNAC03; please send a photo of the current situation, and we’ll confirm the fit in advance.

22,400 lumens is the luminous flux of the light engine, and 20,600 lumens is what comes out with optics. That difference is normal, because every lens absorbs light. The efficiency therefore ranges from 224 lm/W without specific optics to approximately 206 lm/W with optics. We calculate using the value that corresponds to your chosen optic.

That depends on the ceiling. If there is recessed space and you want a seamless finish, then the Recess. If there is no recessed space or it concerns a steel structure, then the Surface. If the luminaire needs to extend further below the ceiling, then the Surface Extended. If you are replacing a CREE 304, then the Surface Extended. And if the environment is warmer than +50 °C, then the HT.

The mounting depth and the weight. The Surface is 70 mm deep and weighs 4.9 kg, the Surface Extended 118 mm and 5.4 kg. Furthermore, they are identical: the same 380 by 380 mm, the same 22,400 lumens, and the same electronics. The Extended is intended for situations where the luminaire needs to extend further below the ceiling.

As soon as the ambient temperature structurally exceeds +50 °C: drying tunnels, drying lines, car washes with steam cleaning, and hot process rooms in the food and paper industries. The HT works up to +120 °C, with chemically tempered glass, a heat-resistant 5-meter SiHF-OB silicone cable, and an external driver outside the hot zone.

That depends on the temperature, and we prefer to write that down rather than give a single number. Measured according to TM-21 and reported as L90B05: 360,000 hours at +50 °C, 103,000 hours at +85 °C, 71,700 hours at +105 °C, and 51,400 hours at +120 °C. Even that last value is still well over fourteen years at ten burning hours per day.

No. Due to the high temperatures, lenses are not possible; the HT has a single beam angle of 120 degrees, very wide, with a field angle of 168 degrees. If you need a directional beam in a hot zone, a floodlight from our high-temperature line is the right choice and not this canopy.

With 0-10V, PWM, DALI-2, or via NFC. With NFC, this is done using a smartphone or a programming device, without opening the luminaire and without disconnecting the power. Convenient on a canopy, where every action on a hanging luminaire requires a cherry picker. A position above the pumps can thus be set higher than a position above the drive-through lane.

Not on the standard versions: the driver is internal and the fixture operates directly from 90 to 305 volts. On the HT version it is, and that is intentional: drivers are more sensitive to heat than the LED module itself, so in a hot zone the driver is the component that fails first. Placed outside the zone, the thermal load decreases and maintenance is possible without entering the hot area.

That follows from the dimensions of the awning, the height of the bottom, and the desired light level. As a rule of thumb for a canopy, the spacing should be approximately equal to the height; too far apart will result in dark areas between the positions. We will calculate it and provide the positions and the wattage per position.

EN 12464-2 sets the requirements for the lighting of outdoor workplaces, and a petrol station canopy falls under that: illuminance, uniformity and glare. We assess the calculation against this. If the station borders on residential areas or nature, the NSVV guideline on light nuisance also applies.

No. For many petrol station canopies, the general lighting falls outside the ATEX zone, but this must always be checked per location and zoning plan. If your situation requires a certified luminaire within the zone, we will state this in advance and refer you to another supplier.

CE and IEC/EN 60598-1 and -2-5 for luminaire safety. EMC emission and immunity have been tested by TÜV according to EN 55015 and EN 61547, and for maritime applications IEC 60533 for engine room, bridge and open deck. Furthermore, IEC 60529 and ISO 20653 for ingress protection classes, IEC 62262 for IK08, ISO 9223 class C5 for corrosion, and RoHS and REACH by self-declaration.

IP69K means completely dust- and waterproof, including cleaning with a high-pressure water jet at close range. Under a canopy, that is not excessive: water and foam are used at a car wash or gas station, and the canopy hangs right in the middle of it. IK08 is the impact resistance of the front; the front is diffuse chemically tempered glass or diffuse borosilicate glass.

Maintenance is the real cost factor for a canopy: each service requires an aerial lift and usually a cordoned-off area. The fixture itself has no wear parts; the recommended inspection is limited to cleaning the front and checking the mounting and the cable entry. On the HT model, the driver is located externally and can be replaced without disassembling the fixture.

The WP is a wall-mounted fixture with a full cut-off reflector that directs the light forward. The Manta hangs beneath an awning or ceiling and illuminates the floor below it. Different positions, different light patterns; they are not interchangeable.

A five-year limited product warranty on all models, including the HT. For larger projects and chains with multiple locations, extended warranty agreements are negotiable; we tailor these on a case-by-case basis.
