The Shark is the second generation in our heavy-duty line: it builds on over 13 years of Barracuda experience in the mining industry, but is more efficient (up to 156 lm/W) and, at 9.2 kg, the lightest fixture in its class per lumen. The Shark is designed for locations where a lighter solution is preferred over the Barracuda, or where slightly more light output is needed—up to 50,000 lumens—without having to upgrade to the Orca.
A unique feature of the Shark is its DC version with 35–60 VDC, specially developed for large electric cranes that operate at higher DC voltages. The fixture fits into the Crane Light Stabilizer and the other brackets in our mounting system, and is widely used on mobile light towers such as our 2-Axle Light Tower — Europe's most powerful mobile light tower.
The Shark occupies a unique position between the Barracuda and the Orca. It is designed for lighting applications that require heavy-duty ruggedness, but where weight, efficiency, or light output are more important than the more compact size of the Barracuda.
The Shark is a logical choice when:
The Shark is not intended for every lighting application. It is precisely by being clear about this that we can provide better advice and achieve a better end result.
The Shark is usually not the right choice when:
The standard Shark in an aluminum version with a titanium-based e-coating and a bracket made of high-tensile 316L stainless steel. Available in an AC version (90–305 / 180–528 VAC, up to 50,000 lumens) and DC version (20–35 or 35–60 VDC, up to 46,000 lumens), optionally without optics for a wide light distribution.
The Shark shares the mounting kit with the Barracuda: a heavy-duty bracket that absorbs shocks up to 200 G, a rear-mount bracket for the driver box on the back of the fixture, the Crane Light Stabilizer for automatic stabilization on the crane jib, and a boom kit for mounting on flat-top tower cranes.
The same Shark, but in a white marine finish. Specially painted for ships, offshore installations, and harbor cranes, where white is the standard color for deck and crane equipment. Identical lighting performance, IP69K, and IK10.
The Shark owes its reputation not only to its cast aluminum housing containing less than 0.08% of copper, its titanium-based e-coating, and its IK10 impact-resistant front, but also to the mounting system that surrounds it. Especially on cranes, mobile light towers, and heavy equipment, the mounting system determines whether a luminaire will reach its expected service life.
That is why the Shark is available with the same application-specific accessories as the Barracuda:
For harbor, transshipment, and tower cranes where efficiency and weight matter. The 35–60 VDC version connects directly to large electric cranes, and with the Crane Light Stabilizer, the beam in the boom remains focused on the work zone.
The Shark is the second generation of the Barracuda and builds on more than 13 years of mining experience: haul trucks, excavators, and bulk handling equipment. With its heavy-duty bracket, the fixture can withstand shocks of up to 200 G.
For harbor cranes, offshore platforms, and ships. Standard protected with titanium e-coating and IP69K, or as a white marine version for integration on deck and crane equipment.
Light enough for quick setup and takedown, strong enough to shine hundreds of meters away. The Shark is the go-to choice for our 2Axle light tower—the most powerful mobile light tower in Europe.

Unique within the product family is the Shark DC version with a voltage range of 35–60 VDC. Large electric cranes, such as modern port and transshipment cranes, are increasingly operating at higher DC voltages around 48 V. The Shark connects directly to these voltages, without the need for separate inverters or intermediate power supplies. Combined with the Crane Light Stabilizer and the other brackets from the mounting range, the Shark is used in a variety of applications: from boom lighting to deck lighting. Also available in 20–35 VDC for the traditional 24V onboard power system.
The Shark is chosen not only based on power or lumens, but primarily on how the light is directed. The lens angle determines where the light falls: a narrow 14° spot concentrates the light over a very long distance. For example, when mounted on mobile light towers, the Shark in floodlight configuration shines hundreds of meters away, while a 69° lens illuminates a wide area up close. In addition, the asymmetric 14°x46° flare and a version without optics are available. The right choice depends on the mounting height, work zone, and desired illumination level. JEL Products can support this with a project-specific light calculation upon request.

Not every application requires the same lighting pattern. Especially for cranes, machines, and mobile installations, the mounting height, the operator’s line of sight, and the shape of the work area determine which combination of lens options will yield the best results. For projects where this must be substantiated, JEL Products provides a customized lighting calculation, including the number of fixtures, their positioning, and expected illuminance levels in lux.
No. The Shark is not a work light, but a heavy-duty industrial floodlight. The fixture is designed for lighting applications that require high light output, efficiency, and durability—conditions in which a work light or lightweight floodlight would be the weak link.
The Shark is essentially the second generation of the Barracuda: more efficient (156 vs. 139 lm/W), higher output (50,000 vs. 44,650 lumens), and lighter per lumen (9.2 kg). The Barracuda remains the choice when the more compact size is a better fit or when a high-temperature or 316L version is required. Both share the same mounting system and the same IK10/IP69K rating.
The Snapper HC is a multi-configuration assembly of several lightweight Snapper units (270–500 W, up to approx. 83,000 lumens) and is chosen when maximum output per fixture is required with a lightweight design. The Shark is a single-piece, die-cast, heavy-duty luminaire with IK10 impact resistance—the more robust choice for environments subject to impact, vibration, and harsh conditions.
The Orca is designed for the largest cranes, machines, and mining equipment, delivering 800 W and approximately 111,000 lumens from a single 22.7 kg housing. The Shark is a step down from that and is designed for applications where up to 50,000 lumens per fixture is sufficient and weight and efficiency are more important considerations.
In most cases, not as primary site lighting. For site lighting and area lighting—where large areas need to be illuminated from tall masts without causing light pollution—the DarkLicht solutions are a more logical and efficient choice. On mobile light towers, such as our 2Axle light tower, however, the Shark is a proven choice.
The correct lens angle depends on mounting height, desired illuminance, surface area, and the nature of the work. There is no universal rule of thumb that adequately determines this. The correct choice is substantiated with a lighting calculation in a simulation program. JEL Products can perform this calculation for you, tailored to your specific situation. This way, not only the lens angle but also the number of luminaires, their positioning, and the expected illuminance levels in lux are determined.
The Shark is certified in accordance with CE and IEC 60598. CE certifies compliance with the applicable European directives. IEC 60598 is the international standard for lighting fixtures and includes requirements regarding construction, electrical safety, and thermal behavior. In addition, the Shark helps ensure compliance with EN 12464-2 for the safe lighting of industrial outdoor workplaces. For specific project requirements, JEL Products can assess the certification status on a per-application basis.
Yes. The Shark is designed for the harshest outdoor environments. The aluminum alloy housing contains less than 0.08% of copper to minimize galvanic corrosion and features a two-layer titanium-based e-coating; the bracket is made of high-tensile 316L stainless steel as standard. For maritime integration, the Shark is also available in a white marine-grade version.
Yes. The Shark is IP69K-certified, which means the fixture can withstand high-pressure and steam jet cleaning. It is tested in accordance with the IP69K standard: high-pressure, high-temperature water jets from all angles. The fixture is therefore suitable for environments where machines and equipment are periodically cleaned intensively.
No, the Shark is not currently ATEX-certified. The fixture is not intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Zone 1, Zone 2, or similar). For applications where ATEX certification is required, we recommend discussing this with us in advance so that a suitable solution can be determined.
Copper in aluminum alloys accelerates galvanic corrosion when the aluminum comes into contact with stainless steel or seawater. By deliberately keeping the copper content below 0.08%, this corrosion chain is interrupted. Combined with the 316L stainless steel bracket and the titanium-based e-coating, this results in a fixture that maintains its structural integrity even during prolonged exposure to salty or corrosive environments. This is a deliberate choice of materials, not a standard specification.
Yes. The Shark shares its DNA with the Barracuda and is designed for cranes, mining equipment, and mobile light towers where continuous vibrations and shocks are part of the operating environment. For the most demanding load profiles, we offer the heavy-duty bracket, which absorbs shocks and vibrations up to 200 G, and the Crane Light Stabilizer for moving mounting positions on crane booms. For specific vibration classes or regulatory requirements, JEL Products can assess suitability on a per-application basis.
The Shark is low-maintenance and requires no periodic maintenance after installation. There are no consumable parts or modules that need to be replaced. The recommended inspection points are standard for luminaires in harsh environments: checking the cable entry for a proper seal, verifying that the mounting bolts are torqued correctly, and keeping the cooling fins free of dust, grease, or buildup. Beyond this standard inspection, the luminaire requires no active maintenance.
The specified service life of 196,000 hours is an L80B10 value. This means that at that point, 90% of the luminaires will still be delivering at least 80% of their initial light output. With continuous use of 24 hours a day, this corresponds to over 22 years; with 16 hours a day, over 33 years. In practice, the LED itself is rarely the limiting factor; environmental stress, corrosion, mechanical stress, and installation quality determine the actual service life in the field.
The Shark is available in four voltage versions. The AC version with 90–305 VAC is intended for phase-to-neutral connections, generator power, and mains voltage variations; the AC version with 180–528 VAC is intended for phase-to-phase and high-voltage connections. The DC version (20–35 VDC) connects directly to the 24V onboard power system of machines and vehicles. A unique option is the DC version with 35–60 VDC, specially developed for large electric cranes and industrial 48V infrastructure. The correct version is selected at the time of ordering; if in doubt, we recommend consulting with us in advance.
Yes, for applications where the light level needs to be adjustable or the fixture needs to be integrated into a control system, dimming options are available depending on the model. Which control option is appropriate depends on the switching configuration and the system into which the Shark is integrated. Please contact us to discuss the options for your configuration.
Yes. The Shark builds on the Barracuda platform, which has been a standard feature on mining equipment, cranes, and heavy machinery from leading manufacturers for over 13 years. For mass production, JEL Products can tailor the lens angle, power supply (including 48V DC), color temperature, and mounting accessories to the specific machine architecture.
The complete dimensions, including mounting pattern and bracket cross-sections, are included in the product data sheet (product dimensions: 320 x 350 x 90 mm). This is available via the download section or upon request. For project-specific mounting solutions, in addition to the standard bracket, we also supply the heavy-duty 200G bracket, rearmount bracket, Crane Light Stabilizer, and boom kit.
