Salt, chemicals, steam, and daily cleaning take a toll on standard lighting: coatings peel, housings corrode, and within a few years, you’ll be hanging a new set of lights from your ceiling. JEL Products manufactures luminaires that are structurally designed to withstand this environment, made entirely of solid 316L stainless steel instead of coated aluminum. The difference lies in both the material and the design: 316L housings, chemically toughened glass, IP69K seals, and low-copper alloys where aluminum is unavoidable. Proven daily with Boskalis, P&O Ferries, and Farm Frites.

The first question

What corrosion class does your position fall into?

The right choice does not start with lumens, but with the actual exposure at the mounting position. ISO 12944 divides these into corrosivity classes; we use that scale as a guide, not as a certificate. In the event of a combination of factors, the most severe factor determines the design.

C3 and C4: industrial and coastal climate

Production halls, urban outdoor installations, and coastal areas. Because our standard product range is built to C5, you are by definition well within the margin here. A stainless steel version is not necessary here; that saves on the investment.

C5: heavy industry and maritime climate

Ports, coastal areas and heavy industry with continuous salt or chemical exposure. Our standard luminaires are suitable for this out of the box: low-copper aluminum alloy with less than 0.08 percent copper, conversion layer and 2-layer e-coating. No special version needed where others already resort to custom solutions.

C5-M and CX: continuous salt exposure

Offshore, splash zones, constant salt spray, or locations where equipment must last for decades without a single replacement. That’s where you choose solid 316L: no coating that can be damaged, no pitting corrosion from scratches, and up to a 20-year warranty on the housing.

High-Intensity Cleaning: wasdown and Chemicals

Food processing industry and areas subject to daily high-pressure, steam, or foam cleaning. The 316L luminaires are IP69K-rated, smooth, and cleanable, with glass instead of plastic: suitable for HACCP environments. For corrosive substances, CHEM versions are available, engineered for specific exposures.

All SS models are constructed from solid 316L stainless steel, designed for operating temperatures ranging from -45 °C to +50 °C, and are covered by a warranty of up to 20 years on the housing. SS-HT models are rated up to +120 °C, and CHEM models are available upon request; see the product pages for complete specifications.

The material system

Why solid 316L stainless steel wins over coated aluminum

You can’t buy corrosion resistance with a coat of paint. A coated luminaire is only as strong as its weakest scratch: as soon as the coating is damaged, rust creeps underneath and causes it to flake away from the inside out. This is followed by leaks along the seals and failure of the electronics. 316L is the low-carbon variant of 316 steel with added molybdenum, and it is precisely this element that makes it resistant to chlorides - the most aggressive component of seawater and cleaning agents. 304 stainless steel still rusts in salty environments.

Where we use aluminum in the standard range, we deliberately use a low-copper alloy with a conversion layer and 2-layer e-coating, because copper accelerates galvanic corrosion. Gaskets, glass panes, and fasteners are specified to the same standard, because a luminaire is only as corrosion-resistant as its weakest component: a single galvanized bolt ruins a stainless steel installation.

No coating that can fail, but a housing that itself resists the environment. That is the reason we can offer up to 20 years of warranty on the housing.

And where aluminium is unavoidable
< 0.08 % copper

This is the maximum amount of copper contained in the aluminum alloy of our standard product range. Copper accelerates galvanic corrosion; by keeping it out and applying a conversion layer with a 2-layer e-coating, the standard product range is already C5-classified, without requiring a special design.

A scratch in a coating is the starting point for pitting corrosion. Solid 316L does not have that starting point.

The showpiece

20 years of housing: the honest version

316L can also experience superficial discoloration under heavy chloride exposure, known as tea staining. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect the housing; the steel’s passive layer repairs itself. In C5-M and CX environments, we therefore recommend periodically rinsing with fresh water. 316L is low-maintenance, not maintenance-free. Structural rusting, as seen with coated aluminum or 304, is not an issue with 316L in practice; that is why we are confident in offering a 20-year warranty.

In practice, we find that coated luminaires in coastal environments are ready for replacement after 3 to 10 years. A 316L luminaire therefore outlasts two to six generations of coated luminaires. The LED light modules themselves last between 103,500 and 360,000 hours (L90B05), depending on the model.

The purchasing calculation

In corrosive environments, the purchase price is rarely the largest expense. Every replacement cycle incurs new costs for downtime or cordoning off the work zone, aerial lifts, work permits, and installation, plus the risk of poor visibility when luminaires fail before the planned cycle. Less replacement, less risk: the HSE win

Every replacement in a corrosive zone is a high-risk moment: working at height, above water, between installations, or in cleaning zones. Lighting that remains in place for decades means fewer cherry picker movements and work permits, no temporary emergency lighting after failure, and no corroding brackets above work zones.

You don't choose corrosion-resistant lighting based on the product photo. What's decisive is the actual exposure of the luminaire, which consists of more than just salt or moisture.

Common mistakes

Most corrosion damage we see in practice can be traced back to one of these misjudgments:

  • Applying a C3-class luminaire in a marine climate: every scratch becomes a rust spot
  • Mounting RVS luminaires with standard galvanized brackets or bolts
  • IP65 is sufficient where daily cleaning with high pressure or steam is performed
  • Using plastic lenses where cleaning agents and UV attack the material
  • Looking only at the purchase price and accepting the 3-to-10-year replacement cycle
  • Judging salt and chemicals separately from heat, while the combination determines service life

Materials and warranty

The solid 316L stainless steel housing is covered by a warranty of up to 20 years against rust-through and corrosion damage to the housing itself. The LED light module and electronics have their own warranty period, typically 5 years for heavy industrial use. We tailor the exact terms to each specific application.

316L contains molybdenum, and that element makes all the difference: it protects against chlorides, the most aggressive component of seawater and cleaning agents. 304 stainless steel still corrodes in salty environments. Coated aluminum is only as strong as its weakest scratch: as soon as the paint layer is damaged, pitting corrosion begins underneath.

Yes, made of high-quality 316L. That’s essential: a stainless steel luminaire mounted on a galvanized bracket will still rust at the mounting point, and contact between dissimilar metals accelerates galvanic corrosion. Using a single material grade for the entire installation is the only sustainable approach.

Yes. C5-M and CX environments are exactly the type of conditions for which the SS line was designed. The Boskalis and Bokalift 2 are equipped with our luminaires and operate in international waters. We tailor the specifications for offshore applications on a project-by-project basis.

Product Choice

Ranging in luminous flux: Piranha SS (8,400 lm) for washing areas and machinery, DarkLicht S SS (10,300 lm) where glare-free light is required, Snapper SS (up to 26,000 lm) as a versatile floodlight, Barracuda SS (44,100 lm) for cranes and heavy equipment, and Orca SS (111,300 lm) for masts and large work platforms. Both are available. AC is the standard for permanent installations connected to mains power. 24V DC is available for ships, vehicles, and installations with low-voltage power supplies, such as the Piranha SS, Snapper SS, and DarkLicht S SS. For most models, 0-10V and DALI dimming options are available; please indicate that you want dimming when placing your order.

Environment and cleaning

The SS line is IP69K-rated: resistant to high-pressure and steam cleaning at close range. Foam cleaning and standard cleaning agents used in the food industry are also no problem. For aggressive or unusual chemicals, we offer CHEM models; please let us know which agents you use.

Yes: a smooth, cleanable 316L housing without edges that trap dirt, chemically tempered glass instead of plastic, and a IP69K seal to prevent cleaning water from entering. Farm Frites uses these designs in its drying tunnels. We deliberately do not claim any formal food certification; however, we consistently design our products in accordance with the hygiene requirements of HACCP environments.

316L is resistant to the humid atmosphere containing chlorine and H2S found in sewage treatment plants and wet basements. Because concentrations vary greatly depending on the installation, we provide recommendations on a case-by-case basis; for heavy chemical exposure, we will jointly select a CHEM version with adapted seals.

This brings you to the SS-HT combinations: 316L and continuous operation up to +120 °C, with the driver located outside the hot zone in a DRB driver box. Think of drying tunnels in the food industry or steam-rich process zones. Certification and standards

No. Corrosion and explosion hazards are separate issues. The SS luminaires are CE-marked and manufactured in accordance with IEC 60598, but are not ATEX-certified. If your corrosive zone also has a ATEX classification, please describe the situation to us: often, the lighting position can be chosen so that the luminaire remains outside the ATEX zone while the light still reaches the zone.

Assembly and maintenance

Install the luminaire just like a standard floodlight, but the details determine its service life: use stainless steel fasteners, prevent direct contact between stainless steel and galvanized steel or aluminum, and carefully seal the cable glands. The included brackets are 316L as standard. On moving and vibrating structures such as cranes and ships, the luminaires are designed for vibration-resistant mounting with safety locks.

Not much, but not zero. In cases of heavy chloride exposure, we recommend periodic rinsing with fresh water and an annual visual inspection of seals and cable glands. In areas requiring frequent cleaning, this maintenance is automatically performed as part of the regular wasdown cleaning routine. If a part does happen to get damaged, the luminaires are modular, and glass panels and mounting parts are available separately.

Engineering and probationary period

Yes, that’s the core of our approach. Tell us what kind of stress the system is under: salt, cleaning agents, chemicals, concentrations, and temperatures. Our engineers determine the correct model for each application - ranging from the standard 316L to the CHEM - and combine that with a load calculation for the system. For shipyards, machine builders, and OEMs, we provide custom configurations and mass production.

Yes, and in case of doubt about the actual load, we even recommend it. With a trial placement in the harshest position, you can see how the luminaire holds up in your environment before making the investment.
