LED floodlight, 270 to 500 W

Snapper HC: Maximum weight per kilogram on the crane

Up to 83,000 lumens at 12.6 kg, built from cast light modules without seams or end caps. Developed for harbor cranes (STS and RMG) and mobile light towers, where every kilo on the structure counts.

The Snapper HC is a multi-configuration model: two (x2) or three (x3) cast light modules on a single bracket, available in AC (90 to 305 or 180 to 528 VAC) and 24V DC for mobile poles. Three bracket options—standard, top-mount, and side-mount—allow for installation in virtually any position. Each fixture comes with a safety cord.

The choice

When the Snapper HC Is the Right Choice, and When It Isn't

The Snapper HC is designed for applications that require a lot of light, but where every kilogram counts: crane structures where weight dictates the installation, and mobile light towers that are set up and taken down daily. Net efficiency per kilogram is the starting point for the design. It is not intended for every application, and it is precisely by being clear about this that we can provide better advice and achieve a better end result.

A logical choice when

STS, RMG, or other harbor cranes should be illuminated with maximum light per mounting point.
The luminaire on a mobile lighting tower is assembled and disassembled each time
The weight on the structure or boom must remain limited at high light output
Both AC and 24V DC within a single fleet prevents
The mounting position requires a topmount, under-counter or ceiling mount, or a sidemount.
The light beam must be adjusted per position: from a 15-degree spot to a 90-degree wide beam
More output is needed than just one Snapper, without switching to the Orca
Replacement costs and downtime carry more weight than the lowest purchase price

Usually not the right choice when

Maximum impact resistance of IK10 is a strict requirement: the Snapper HC is IK08
When more than 83,000 lumens from a single luminaire are needed: then the Orca logical
One compact floodlight is enough: then the Snapper or Barracuda better
Complete light shielding, full cut-off, is required against light pollution: then is DarkLicht more appropriate
ATEX or Ex certification is required: the Snapper HC does not have it
If you need a high-temperature version, choose the Snapper HT or Barracuda HT; see high temperature lighting
Evidence

Developed on the crane where he does his work

The HC originated from a demand by terminals: more light per mounting point on STS and RMG cranes, without extra weight and windage on the structure. While comparable multi-unit luminaires are built from an extruded profile with end caps, each light module of the HC is cast from a single mold.

Three light modules, 83,000 lumens, and 12.6 kg on a single mounting point. That’s why port cranes in Europe, Australia, and the United States use the Snapper HC.

Snapper HC x1

31,000 lumens

Technically speaking, it’s not an HC, but rather the single unit on which the series is based: 180 W and 31,000 lumens at 172 lm/W, all from the same cast design. The choice to use a single compact unit per position is explained in the Snapper.

Montage

Three bracket options and a safety cord as standard.

When mounted on a crane or light pole, the mounting method determines whether a luminaire will reach its expected service life and whether installation and maintenance remain feasible. That is why the Snapper HC is available with three bracket options, tailored to the mounting position.

Standard bracket

The classic bracket without driver box mounting, specifically for DC setups such as on mobile light masts, where the power supply is already present on the mast.

Topmount

For mounting directly underneath the crane structure or the ceiling, with the fixture hanging and facing downwards from the mounting surface.

Sidemount

For mounting against a crane structure or wall, with the fixture protruding laterally from the mounting surface.

Safety lanyard

Standard with every fixture, so the installation also complies with the applicable fall protection requirements for working at heights.

Also on the mast

The 24V DC versions connect directly to the power supply of a mobile light mast, without inverter.

Construction

Cast from a single mold, developed for crane and mast

Most multi-unit floodlights on the market are constructed from an extruded profile with end caps. This is inexpensive to manufacture, but results in seams, added weight, and reduced direct heat dissipation. Each light module of the Snapper HC is cast from a single mold, specifically designed for use on harbor cranes and mobile light towers. An x2 or x3 consists of two or three of these identical modules, mounted together on a single bracket.

No seams or end caps to act as a weak point, cooling fins precisely where the heat is generated, and the lowest possible weight per lumen. Combined with the titanium-based e-coating, the UV-resistant polycarbonate front, and the standard-included safety lanyard, this results in a luminaire built for years of daily use at height.

For salty air and intensive outdoor use: see corrosion-resistant lighting.

The right optics put the light in the right place

The Snapper HC is chosen not only for its output, but primarily for its light control. Each module within the configuration can be fitted with its own lens: a 15-degree spot for the rows of containers in the distance, combined with a 60- or 90-degree floodlight for the work area directly beneath the crane.

Lighting application and design

Not every application requires the same light distribution. Especially with cranes and masts, the mounting height, the operator's line of sight, and the shape of the work zone determine which lens combination per fixture delivers the best result.

For projects where this must be demonstrably substantiated, we provide a lighting calculation custom: number of fixtures, positioning, and expected lighting levels in lux, in accordance with the NSVV code of conduct. The calculation is free of charge.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About the Snapper HC

Is your question not listed? Call Lucas de Graaf directly.

No. The Snapper HC is a multi-configuration floodlight designed for permanent mounting on cranes, masts, and structures. For compact work lighting on machines, the Goby, Piranha, or DarkLicht S are the recommended choices.

The Snapper is a single compact unit ranging from 150 to 180 W with approximately 31,000 lumens. The Snapper HC combines two or three of these same cast light modules on a single bracket, delivering up to 83,000 lumens per mounting point, with each module capable of having its own lens. Choose the Snapper for widely spaced mounting positions; choose the HC where maximum light output is required per mounting position, such as on crane mounts.

The Shark is a single 320-watt heavy-duty fixture with approximately 50,000 lumens and IK10 impact resistance. In the x3 configuration, the Snapper HC delivers more light—up to 83,000 lumens—at a comparable weight and with per-unit configurable lenses. Choose the Shark when impact is a risk; choose the HC when output per kilogram and lens flexibility are priorities.

The Orca is the most powerful: 800 W and 111,300 lumens from a single 22.7 kg housing with IK10 rating. The Snapper HC x3 delivers 83,000 lumens at 12.6 kg. At crane positions where weight and wind resistance are factors, the HC is therefore often the more practical choice; the Orca wins out when absolute output is the top priority.

In most cases, it is not used as primary site lighting. For sites and area lighting without light pollution, the DarkLicht solutions are a more logical choice. On mobile light poles—a form of temporary work site lighting—the Snapper HC is, in fact, a proven choice.

The correct lens angle depends on the mounting height, desired illuminance, surface area, and the nature of the work. With the Snapper HC, you also have the flexibility to customize each unit: spot and wide-beam lenses can be combined within a single fixture. The correct choice is supported by a light calculation in a simulation program; we’ll perform this for you, tailored to the crane or mast position.

The Snapper HC is certified in accordance with CE and IEC 60598. In addition, the fixture helps ensure compliance with EN 12464-2 for the safe lighting of industrial outdoor workplaces. The safety cord included as standard meets the applicable requirements for installation at heights. For specific project requirements, we assess the certification status on a case-by-case basis.

Yes. The Snapper HC was developed for ports and maritime environments. The die-cast housing contains less than 0.08 percent copper to minimize galvanic corrosion and features a two-layer titanium-based e-coating. This makes the luminaire resistant to salt air and intensive outdoor use on cranes and terminals.

Yes, for normal outdoor use: the Snapper HC is IP67-rated and therefore completely dust- and waterproof, with a UV-resistant polycarbonate front. For environments where fixtures are periodically cleaned with high pressure or steam, we recommend discussing this with us in advance; IP69K models are available in our product line for such applications.

No, the Snapper HC is not currently ATEX-certified. The fixture is not intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Zone 1, Zone 2, or similar). For applications where ATEX certification is required, we recommend discussing this with us in advance so that a suitable solution can be determined.

Copper in aluminum alloys accelerates galvanic corrosion when the aluminum is in contact with stainless steel or seawater. By intentionally keeping the copper content below 0.08 percent, this corrosion chain is broken. Combined with the titanium-based e-coating, the fixture maintains its structural integrity even after prolonged exposure to salty harbor air.

Yes, that is the primary operating environment for the Snapper HC. Crane structures and mobile masts are subject to constant vibrations and wind loads; the light modules, cast from a single mold, have no seams or end caps that could act as weak points. The brackets—standard, top-mount, and side-mount—are designed to withstand these loads, and the safety cord secures the fixture during installation at height.

The Snapper HC is low-maintenance and requires no periodic product maintenance after installation. The recommended inspection points are standard for luminaires mounted on cranes and masts: check the cable entry and the safety cord, verify that the bracket bolts are torqued properly, and keep the cooling fins clear. Beyond that, the luminaire requires no active maintenance.

The specified lifespan of 360,000 hours is an L90B05 rating: at that point, at least 95 percent of the luminaires still deliver a minimum of 90 percent of the initial light output. That is a considerably stricter standard than the common L70 and L80 ratings in the market. With continuous use of 24 hours a day, 360,000 hours corresponds to more than 41 years. In practice, the LED itself is rarely the limiting factor; environmental stress, temperature, corrosion, mechanical stress, and installation quality determine the actual lifespan in the field.

The AC versions support 90 to 305 VAC (phase-neutral, generator power) or 180 to 528 VAC (phase-phase and three-phase power, common on cranes). The DC versions operate on the 24V vehicle electrical system (20 to 35 VDC) and are the standard choice for mobile light towers: directly on the tower power supply, without an inverter. The correct version is chosen upon ordering; in case of doubt, we will coordinate this in advance.

Yes. For applications where the light level needs to be adjustable or the luminaire must be integrated into a control system, dimming options are available per version. Which control version is suitable depends on the switching equipment of the crane or mast. Please contact us to discuss the options for your configuration.

Yes. The Snapper HC is included as a standard component on harbor cranes and mobile light towers from several manufacturers. For mass production, we tailor the configuration (x2 or x3), the number of lenses per module, the voltage rating, and the bracket type—standard, top-mount, or side-mount—to the machine’s architecture.

The complete dimensions, including mounting pattern and bracket cross-sections per bracket type, are included in the product datasheet: the x2 measures 320 × 314 × 205 mm, the x3 measures 320 × 484 × 205 mm, and the bracket is adjustable ±180 degrees in steps of 30. The datasheet is available via the download section or upon request.
