  • Whether the heat sink is undamaged and the cooling fins are completely intact
  • Whether the sealing materials used are suitable for the specified temperature range

Steel mill lighting places special demands. In addition to high ambient temperatures, infrared radiation also plays a major role. Therefore, check whether the datasheet explicitly states that the luminaire has been tested for IR exposure, not just ambient heat. These are two different loads, each having its own impact on the lifespan of the luminaire.

What do you check on the electrical connections and wiring?

Electrical connections are a critical point of attention for high-temperature luminaires. Heat accelerates the aging of insulation materials, meaning damaged wiring or loose connections immediately pose a safety risk. Always check this before the luminaire is installed.

Look specifically at:

  • The condition of the connection cable and the insulation jacket, no cracks or wear
  • The cable gland: properly tightened and free of damage
  • The connection terminals in the junction box, no loose hanging wires

  • Whether the connection values on the nameplate match the available mains supply (voltage, frequency, power)

Also check that the junction box is properly closed and the seal is intact. In dusty, humid, or chemically vapored environments, a damaged seal on the junction box is a direct source of malfunctions or worse. When are you allowed to refuse or return a delivered luminaire?

  • The temperature resistance on the nameplate differs from the order
