What should you check upon delivery of high-temperature lighting fixtures?

Upon delivery of high-temperature lighting fixtures, you check for physical transport damage, the presence of correct documentation and certifications, the correct temperature specifications, and the condition of electrical connections. This applies to every fixture intended for extreme environments such as steel mills, foundries, or other industrial locations with high thermal loads. Below you will find a practical checklist for each component.

What physical damage should you inspect for immediately upon delivery?

Always check the outside of the packaging upon delivery before unpacking. Visible dents, tears, or traces of moisture on the box are a primary signal that the fixture may have been damaged during transport. Note any damage on the waybill before signing for receipt.

After unpacking, pay attention to the following:

  • Cracks or dents in the housing, even small ones
  • Damaged or cracked lenses and seals
  • Loose or missing attachment points and screws
  • Deformation of the heatsink or fins
  • Damaged cable glands or cable entries
  • Scratches or wear on seals that could compromise IP protection

By High-temperature lighting the integrity of the housing is extra critical. A damaged seal in an environment of one hundred degrees or more quickly leads to premature failure. Always photograph all damage immediately after unpacking, even if it seems minor at first glance.

What certifications and documentation must be included with the delivery?

A professionally supplied industrial luminaire for high-temperature applications is always accompanied by a complete documentation package. If that package is missing, the luminaire is technically unusable in a certified installation.

Upon receipt, check that the following documents are present:

  1. CE Declaration of Conformity including the applicable guidelines
  2. Technical datasheet with temperature specifications, IP rating, IK rating and lumen output
  3. Installation manual in the correct language
  4. Warranty documentation with clear conditions
  5. ATEX certification for applications in potentially explosive areas
  6. Test report in the case of special environmental requirements such as extreme thermal stress

Keep all documentation structured, preferably digitally and linked to the serial number of the luminaire. This is not only useful for maintenance or replacement, but also mandatory during audits and inspections in certified industrial environments.

How do you check if the luminaire has the correct temperature resistance?

The temperature resistance of a luminaire is always stated on the nameplate and in the supplied datasheet. Compare these values directly with the environmental requirements of your installation. For environments such as steel mills or foundries, you need luminaires that can withstand ambient temperatures of at least 60 to 120 degrees Celsius, depending on the location in the hall.

Pay attention to the following points during the inspection:

  • The maximum ambient temperature (Ta) on the nameplate
  • The thermal protection class of the driver and the light source
  • Whether the heat sink is undamaged and the cooling fins are completely intact
  • Whether the sealing materials used are suitable for the specified temperature range

Steel mill lighting places special demands. In addition to high ambient temperatures, infrared radiation also plays a major role. Therefore, check whether the datasheet explicitly states that the luminaire has been tested for IR exposure, not just ambient heat. These are two different loads, each having its own impact on the lifespan of the luminaire.

What do you check on the electrical connections and wiring?

Electrical connections are a critical point of attention for high-temperature luminaires. Heat accelerates the aging of insulation materials, meaning damaged wiring or loose connections immediately pose a safety risk. Always check this before the luminaire is installed.

Look specifically at:

  • The condition of the connection cable and the insulation jacket, no cracks or wear
  • The cable gland: properly tightened and free of damage
  • The connection terminals in the junction box, no loose hanging wires
  • Cable type: for high-temperature applications, heat-resistant wiring is required
  • Whether the connection values on the nameplate match the available mains supply (voltage, frequency, power)

Also check that the junction box is properly closed and the seal is intact. In dusty, humid, or chemically vapored environments, a damaged seal on the junction box is a direct source of malfunctions or worse. If in doubt about the electrical integrity: have the luminaire inspected by a certified electrical contractor before putting it into service.

When are you allowed to refuse or return a delivered luminaire?

You may refuse or return a delivered luminaire if it does not meet the agreed specifications, is visibly damaged by transport, or if mandatory documentation is missing. Always record this in writing and communicate it directly with the supplier.

Concrete situations in which returning is justified:

  • The temperature resistance on the nameplate differs from the order
  • There is visible transport damage to the housing or optics
  • CE documentation or the datasheet is completely missing
  • The IP or IK rating does not match the specifications
  • The electrical connections are damaged or the wiring is not heat resistant
  • The fixture is clearly a different model than ordered

Never sign for receipt without reservation if you notice damage to the packaging. Note “subject to inspection” on the waybill and document everything photographically. Contact the supplier within 24 hours to secure your rights.

Practical example: Rockwool Croatia

The Rockwool plant in Zajci, Croatia, needed lighting capable of withstanding ambient temperatures above 110 °C and the infrared radiation from the production process. Standard LED lighting, and even many heat-resistant versions, fail under those conditions. The LED drivers were not allowed to exceed 50 °C, while outdoor summer temperatures approach 40 °C; the driver solution was therefore designed and tested separately. JEL supplied more than 50 Barracuda HT, more than 20 Snapper HT and more than 30 Linear HT, delivering more than 100 lux on the shop floor.

When checking a delivery, the label heat-resistant therefore says little on its own. What matters is the conditions a luminaire was designed for and whether they match the actual location: the ambient temperature, the additional heat from radiation and where the driver will be placed.

The driver in particular deserves attention on receipt: where will it be placed, how is it cooled and what temperature is it specified for? A luminaire that meets the specification but is mounted with its driver in the wrong place risks not reaching its intended lifespan.
