Decision Aid

When should you choose the Orca?

The luminaire is intended for the most demanding tasks: where maximum light output per luminaire counts and fewer luminaires, cables, and mounting points are a win.

  • The maximum light output per luminaire counts: up to 111,300 lumens from a single housing
  • Long distances need to be bridged: with the 14° spot up to approximately 700 meters
  • The mounting position requires a stabilizing bracket, a rear mount, or the Orca Crane Bracket
  • Fewer luminaires, cables and mounting points are desired on large cranes and installations
  • AC and DC occur within a single fleet
  • The environment is corrosive or reaches +120 °C

When another luminaire fits better

The Orca is not intended for every task. Being clear about its limitations leads to a better end result.

  • Weight and installation space are decisive factors: then the Barracuda or the Shark
  • The load-bearing capacity of the structure is limited: the luminaire weighs 22.7 kg
  • The required light output per position is also achievable with a smaller luminaire
  • Complete light blocking against light pollution is required: then DarkLicht
  • ATEX or Ex certification is required
  • A standard indoor luminaire for light applications will suffice
Versions

Four versions

The same design philosophy as the Barracuda, but on a larger scale: a cast housing with less than 0.08 % copper, a titanium e-coating, and a 316L bracket. The differences lie in the material, the temperature limit, and the power supply.

Optics

Optics and measured beam angles

The lens angle determines where the light ends up. Below are the measured angles from our own IES library, with the optic name as the order code next to it. An optic name is not a measured value: the 69° optic measures 72°. If you are in doubt between two angles, we will substantiate the choice with a free lighting calculation.

Mounting

Video editing software

On the heaviest cranes and installations, the mounting system determines whether a luminaire will last its full service life. That is why the Orca shares the mounting system with the Barracuda, scaled to its size.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your question not listed, or would you like something calculated? An engineer will respond within 1 business day.

The Orca is a scaled-up version of the same platform: 156 lenses in a single cast housing weighing 22.7 kg, delivering up to 111,300 lm at 800 W. The Barracuda and the Shark operate at 320 W and weigh around 10 kg; choose one of these when weight and mounting space are the deciding factors. On large cranes, a single Orca can easily replace two smaller luminaires, including cables and mounting points.

For the AC version with the TLD800 driver: 2 on a B16, 2 on a C16, 4 on a C25, and 3 on a D16. The inrush current of the TLD800 is remarkably low, 5.4 A peak, so power is the limiting factor here, not the peak current. Calculated using ABB S200 at 220 V; guideline for the engineering phase, not a replacement for the electrical installation calculation.

Two: 20–35 VDC (24 V nominal) and 35–60 VDC (48 V nominal) for large electric cranes. At 24 V, pay attention to the current draw of approx. 33.4 A per luminaire; at 48 V this is approx. 16.7 A. The 316L DC version is standard 48 V, with 24 V available on request as a custom solution.

Yes. The AC versions are dimmable via 0–10 V, PWM, and DALI-2, and can also be configured via NFC. For the DC versions, dimming is customized because a constant current is used there.

That depends on the mounting height, the desired illuminance, the shape of the work area, and the operator’s line of sight. We support this with a light calculation. The datasheet lists the measured angle, not the lens name: the 69° lens measures 72°. With the 14° spot lens, the Orca achieves 1 lux at approximately 1,000 meters.

Yes. The housing contains less than 0.08 % copper and has a 2-layer titanium-based e-coating; the bracket is 316L. This corresponds to corrosion class C5 Industrial and Maritime. For aggressive chemicals or extremely salty water, the all-316L version is available, with C5 and CX ratings, a PREN of approximately 24, and a 20-year warranty on the housing.

Yes. The luminaire has been tested to IP66, IP67, IP68, and IP69K. All of these classes are mentioned because they are different tests: IP69K is high-pressure and high-temperature steam jet, IP68 is immersion. One does not imply the other.

The aluminum version weighs 22.7 kg including bracket, the 316L version 36.3 kg. For pole mounting, the remote driver or DRB-2 must be included in the pole calculation. We provide the necessary data for the structural engineer.

Yes. The vibration class is 6 G at resonance, tested in accordance with IEC 60068-2-6, with shock testing in accordance with IEC 60068-2-27. For crane jibs, the self-stabilizing stabilizing bracket is available.

The 360,000 hours is a TM-21 L90B05 value: at that point, at least 95 % of the luminaires will still be delivering at least 90 % of their initial light output. This is more stringent than the standard L70 and L80 specifications. In practice, the LED is rarely the limiting factor; environmental conditions and installation quality determine the luminaire’s actual performance in the field.

No. The luminaire is not intended for hazardous areas. If ATEX is a requirement, please discuss this in advance, and we will determine a suitable solution together.

Yes. The Orca is included as a standard component on the largest cranes and machines from leading manufacturers, including the Mammoet SK6000. For mass production, we tailor the optics, voltage, color temperature, and mounting to the machine’s architecture.

CE, IEC 60598, EN 55015, EN 61547 and the EMC Directive. IEC 60598 covers construction, electrical safety, and thermal behavior. In addition, the luminaire helps meet EN 12464-2 for the safe lighting of industrial outdoor workplaces. Configurations for North America are available upon request.
