Snapper LED Floodlight

Compact, lightweight LED floodlight for cranes, machinery, and maritime applications, optionally in 316L stainless steel or as a high-temperature version up to +120°C.

The Snapper was developed for applications where installation space and weight are limited, but the requirements for light output and reliability remain high. With 150–180 W of power, up to approximately 31,000 lumens, and a luminaire weight of just 2.7 kg, the Snapper offers one of the best lumens-per-kilogram ratios on the market. As such, the fixture is intended for cranes, construction and earth-moving machinery, service vehicles, and maritime applications where a full-fledged floodlight is needed without unnecessary bulk.

The product family is available in an aluminum version, in all-316L stainless steel for extreme corrosion, a quantum-sealed version for excellent chemical resistance, and as a high-temperature version for environments up to +120°C. Each version is available in AC (90–305 VAC) and DC (20–35 VDC) configurations, allowing the Snapper to be connected to both mains power and directly to the onboard power supply of machines and vehicles.

When should you choose the Snapper?

The Snapper is designed for functional lighting applications that require a compact design, low weight, and reliable light output. The fixture is particularly useful when mounting space is limited, load-bearing capacity is a factor, or a high light output per fixture is needed without having to switch to a larger and heavier product.

The Snapper is a logical choice when:

When is the Snapper not the right choice?

The Snapper is not intended for every lighting application. It is precisely by being clear about this that we can provide better advice and achieve a better end result.

The Snapper is usually not the right choice when:

Variations of the Snapper

22,000 - 26,000 lumen

The standard Snapper in an aluminum version with a titanium-based e-coating. Available in an AC version (90–305 VAC, 180 W / 31,000 lumens) and a DC version (20–35 VDC, 150 W / 25,000 lumens) for direct connection to the 24V electrical system of machines and vehicles.

49,500 - 83,000 lumens

The Snapper’s multi-configuration: multiple units combined into a single floodlight with a power output of 270–500 W and up to approximately 83,000 lumens. The choice for harbor cranes, STS cranes, and RMG cranes, where net efficiency and a compact design come together.

DCbright Snapper Special Edition Stainless Steel for Extreme Conditions
22,000 - 26,000 lumen

Fully manufactured from 316L stainless steel for marine, offshore, and chemical environments where standard coatings are insufficient. IP69K protected and resistant to high-pressure cleaning, with a 20-year warranty on the housing.

SN35 HT AC High LED temperature lighting
7,000 lumens

Developed for use in ambient temperatures up to +120°C, such as oven zones, drying rooms, and process plants. 35 W / 7,000 lumens with additional thermal safeguarding, chemically hardened glass, and an optional 316L stainless steel housing with heavy chemical resistance.

Not a standard LED floodlight, but a compact industrial fixture

Many compact floodlights are constructed with a light housing, minimal cooling, and a plastic front. This can work fine in light applications, but it is not resistant to continuous vibrations, high-pressure cleaning, salty air, or intensive daily use on machines and cranes.

The Snapper has a different design. The cast aluminum housing with less than 0.08% of copper, the titanium-based e-coating, and the impact-resistant glass protect the electronics and optics from the conditions in which standard fixtures become the weak link. Special cooling fins continuously maintain the LEDs at a safe temperature, which directly contributes to their long service life. As a result, the Snapper is particularly well-suited for projects where reliability and service life are more important than the lowest product price.

Typical Applications of the Snapper

Boom lighting mobile tower crane SN35 built into the rear of the boom

Cranes and lifting equipment

For mobile cranes, tower cranes, and reach stackers where there is little mounting space, but a lot of light is needed. The low weight limits the load on the boom and construction.

Harbor crane PLM Capelle

Construction and earthmoving equipment

For excavators, rollers and other equipment in dusty, humid, and shock-rich environments where the fixture must withstand continuous vibrations.

Maritime and offshore

For ships, drilling rigs, and offshore wind installations. Standard corrosion-resistant coated, or in full 316L stainless steel for the heaviest salt loads.

Stainless steel Snapper HT LED fixtures from JEL Products in paper mill, resistant to corrosion and heat.

High-temperature applications

For oven zones, drying chambers, and process systems up to +120°C, where standard LED lighting is not thermally sufficient. Available as a special Snapper HT version.

Snapper HT for high ambient temperatures

The Snapper HT is the high-temperature version within the Snapper product family. Where standard LED fixtures fail due to heat, the Snapper HT continues to function at ambient temperatures up to +120°C. The fixture is equipped with additional thermal protections against overheating and burnout, chemically toughened glass, and a 25-meter heat-resistant connection cable (SHiF-OB), allowing it to be connected outside the hot zone. An infrared-reflective circuit board and a 316L stainless steel housing are available as options. This makes the Snapper HT suitable for oven zones, drying chambers, climate chambers, and process installations in industries such as paper, glass, and steel.

The right optics ensure light in the right place

The Snapper is chosen not only based on power or lumens, but primarily on how the light is directed. The lens angle determines where the light is directed: a narrow 15° spot concentrates the light over a long distance, while a 90° lens illuminates a wide area close to the application. In addition, asymmetric flare options such as 20°x50° and 20°x85° are available for wide yet focused illumination. The right choice depends on the mounting height, work area, and desired illumination level. JEL Products can support this with a project-specific lighting calculation upon request.

Snapper 1 dimensions (ht)

Lighting application and design

Not every application requires the same lighting pattern. Especially for cranes, machines, and mobile installations, the mounting height, the operator’s line of sight, and the shape of the work area determine which combination of lens options will yield the best results. For projects where this must be substantiated, JEL Products provides a customized lighting calculation, including the number of fixtures, their positioning, and expected illuminance levels in lux.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Snapper

Product Positioning & Choice

No. The Snapper is not a standard work light, but a compact industrial floodlight. The fixture is designed for functional lighting applications that require more light output, a wider beam angle, and higher build quality than a work light can provide, but where size and weight must remain within reasonable limits.

The Marlin is the compact, heavy-duty floodlight in the family: more robustly built (5.5 kg), IP69K and IK10 rated, with 18,000 lumens. The Snapper is lighter (2.7 kg) and, at 150–180 W, delivers more lumens per kilogram. Choose the Marlin when maximum mechanical robustness is required; choose the Snapper when weight, compactness, and light output per fixture are more important.

With 45,000 lumens and 320 W, the Barracuda offers significantly more output and is heavier and more robustly built (10.1 kg, IP69K, IK10). The Snapper is the right choice when size, weight, and power need to be kept in check; the Barracuda is the right choice when more range or light output is needed in the harshest conditions.

The Snapper HC is the multi-configuration version of the Snapper: multiple units combined into a single floodlight with a power output of 270–500 W and a light output of up to approximately 83,000 lumens. The Snapper HC is primarily used on harbor cranes, STS and RMG cranes, and mobile light towers where higher power outputs are required while maintaining the same lightweight design.

In most cases, not as primary site lighting. For site lighting and area lighting—where large areas need to be illuminated from tall poles without causing light pollution—the DarkLicht solutions are a more logical and efficient choice.

Lenshoek & light calculation

The correct lens angle depends on mounting height, desired illuminance, surface area, and the nature of the work. There is no universal rule of thumb that adequately determines this. The correct choice is substantiated with a lighting calculation in a simulation program. JEL Products can perform this calculation for you, tailored to your specific situation. This way, not only the lens angle but also the number of luminaires, their positioning, and the expected illuminance levels in lux are determined.

Certification & Standards

The Snapper is certified in accordance with CE and IEC 60598. CE certifies compliance with the applicable European directives. IEC 60598 is the international standard for lighting fixtures and includes requirements regarding construction, electrical safety, and thermal behavior. In addition, the Snapper helps ensure compliance with EN 12464-2 for the safe lighting of industrial outdoor workplaces. For specific project requirements or additional standards, JEL Products can assess the certification status on a per-application basis.

Protection & Environmental Resistance

Yes. The Snapper is designed for use in demanding outdoor environments. The aluminum alloy housing contains less than 0.08% of copper to minimize galvanic corrosion and features a two-layer titanium-based e-coating. For environments with aggressive chemicals or extremely salty water—such as marine, offshore, and chemical industries—the Snapper is available entirely in 316L stainless steel with a 20-year warranty on the housing.

The standard Snapper is IP67-rated (IP68 available) and is therefore completely dust- and waterproof for outdoor applications. For environments where machines or equipment are periodically cleaned with high pressure or steam, we recommend the 316L stainless steel version with an IP69K rating. This version has been tested in accordance with the IP69K standard: high-pressure, high-temperature water jets from all angles.

No, the Snapper is not currently ATEX-certified. The fixture is not intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (Zone 1, Zone 2, or similar). For applications where ATEX certification is required, we recommend discussing this with us in advance so that a suitable solution can be determined.

Copper in aluminum alloys accelerates galvanic corrosion when the aluminum comes into contact with stainless steel or seawater. By deliberately keeping the copper content below 0.08%, this corrosion chain is interrupted. Combined with the titanium-based e-coating, this results in a fixture that retains its structural integrity even after prolonged exposure to salty or corrosive environments. This is a deliberate choice of materials, not a standard specification.

Vibration & mechanical stress

Yes. The Snapper was specifically developed for machinery-based and mobile applications where continuous vibration loads and wind gusts are part of the operating environment. Examples include mobile cranes, reach stackers, earthmoving equipment, and vehicle-mounted systems. The cast housing, bracket, and internal structure are designed to withstand these load profiles. For specific vibration classes or regulatory requirements, JEL Products can assess suitability on a per-application basis.

Maintenance & longevity

The Snapper is low-maintenance and requires no periodic maintenance after installation. There are no consumable parts or modules that need to be replaced. The recommended inspection points are standard for luminaires in harsh environments: checking the cable entry for a proper seal, verifying the torque of the mounting bolts, and keeping the cooling fins free of dust, grease, or buildup. Beyond this standard inspection, the luminaire requires no active maintenance.

The specified service life of 196,000 hours is an L80B10 value. This means that at that point, 90% of the luminaires will still be delivering at least 80% of their initial light output. With continuous use of 24 hours a day, this corresponds to over 22 years; with 16 hours a day, over 33 years. In practice, the LED itself is rarely the limiting factor; environmental stress, temperature, corrosion, mechanical stress, and installation quality determine the actual service life in the field.

Electrical connection & control

The Snapper is available in two voltage versions. The AC version supports 90–305 VAC and is intended for fixed mains connections, generator power, and installations with mains voltage fluctuations. The DC version supports 20–35 VDC and connects directly to the 24V onboard power system of machines, vehicles, and battery banks. The appropriate version is selected at the time of ordering based on the installation requirements; if in doubt, we recommend consulting with us beforehand.

Yes, for applications where the light level needs to be adjustable or the fixture needs to be integrated into a control system, dimming options are available for each model. The appropriate control option depends on the switching configuration and the system into which the Snapper is integrated. Please contact us to discuss the options for your configuration.

OEM & Customization

Yes. The Snapper was specifically developed in collaboration with leading European machine manufacturers and is therefore ideally suited for OEM applications in which the fixture is supplied as an integral part of a machine, crane, or vehicle. For mass production, JEL Products can tailor the beam angle, voltage configuration, mounting bracket, and color temperature to the specific machine architecture.

The complete set of dimensions, including the mounting pattern and bracket cross-sections, is included in the product datasheet (product dimensions: 320 x 180 x 100 mm).
