JEL Products manufactures fixtures that are structurally designed to withstand this environment, made entirely of solid 316L stainless steel instead of coated aluminum. Ports, coastal areas, and heavy industry with continuous exposure to salt or chemicals. Our standard fixtures are suitable for these applications (C5): a low-copper aluminum alloy containing less than 0.08% copper, a conversion coating, and a two-layer e-coating. No special version is required where others must resort to custom solutions.

You don't buy corrosion resistance with a coat of paint. A coated fixture is only as strong as its weakest scratch: as soon as the coating is damaged, pitting corrosion begins beneath the surface. That's why JEL builds the SS line from solid 316L stainless steel. No coating that can fail, but a housing that itself withstands the environment. That's why we can offer up to a 20-year warranty on the housing.

Why solid 316L stainless steel wins over coated aluminum

316L is the low-carbon variant of 316 steel with added molybdenum: it is precisely this element that makes it resistant to chlorides, the most corrosive component of seawater and cleaning agents. Where we use aluminum in our standard product line, we deliberately use a low-copper alloy (less than 0.08% copper) with a 2-layer e-coating, because copper accelerates galvanic corrosion. Thanks to this construction, our standard product line is already C5-rated; for CX environments and permanent salt exposure, solid 316L is the choice that will last for decades. All gaskets, glass panels, and fasteners are specified to the same standard: a luminaire is only as corrosion-resistant as its weakest component.

20 years of housing: the calculation for procurement

In corrosive environments, the purchase price is rarely the biggest cost. Coated fixtures last 3 to 5 years; each replacement round costs again:

A 316L fixture with up to a 20-year housing warranty will outlast three to five generations of coated fixtures. Specifying correctly once beats any cheaper purchase in total cost. We will run the comparison for you on a per-project basis.

SS-RAD and SS-RAD-PRO: radiation protection

For nuclear and harsh process environments, the Barracuda SS is available with radiation-resistant components (BA-48-320AC-SS-RAD) and as a reinforced RAD-PRO version. Both retain the base model’s full 316L housing, IP69K sealing, and IK10 impact resistance. We coordinate qualification, documentation, and specifications with your engineering department on a project-by-project basis.

SS-HT combinations: corrosion and heat up to +120°C

Where salt, steam, or cleaning come into contact with process heat, the SS-HT models combine the best of both worlds: Snapper SS-HT (7,000 lm), Barracuda SS-HT (20,600 lm), and Orca HT configurations. All feature heat-resistant silicone cabling, with the driver located outside the hot zone in a DRB box. CHEM versions: aggressive chemistry

For exposure to aggressive cleaning agents, acids, or process vapors, we supply CHEM versions with seals and detailing tailored to your specific load. Frequently asked questions about corrosion-resistant lighting

Material & Warranty

The solid 316L stainless steel housing is covered by a warranty of up to 20 years against rusting through and corrosion damage to the housing itself. The light engine and electronics have their own warranty period per product. The exact conditions are determined per application; please request them with your inquiry.

316L contains molybdenum, and that element makes the difference: it protects against chlorides, the most aggressive component of seawater and cleaning agents. 304 stainless steel still pits in salty environments. Coated aluminum is only as strong as its weakest scratch: as soon as the paint layer is damaged, pitting corrosion begins underneath. Solid 316L does not have that problem.

Honest answer: even 316L can discolor superficially under heavy chloride exposure, so-called tea staining. This is cosmetic and does not affect the housing; the passive layer of the steel repairs itself. In C5-M and CX environments, we recommend periodic rinsing with fresh water. Structural rusting through, as with coated aluminum or 304, is practically not an issue with 316L: that's why we dare to offer a warranty of up to 20 years.

Yes. The brackets and fasteners are made of high-quality 316L stainless steel. This is essential: a stainless steel fitting on a galvanized bracket will still rust at the mounting point, and contact between dissimilar metals accelerates galvanic corrosion. A single material class for the entire installation is the only sustainable approach.

Every transport scratch, stone chip, or assembly damage becomes a starting point for pitting corrosion: rust creeps under the coating and peels it off from the inside. This is followed by leaks along seals and failure of the electronics. In practice, we see coated fixtures in coastal environments ready for replacement after 3 to 5 years.

Yes. C5-M and CX environments are precisely the domain for which the SS line is built. The Boskalis Bokalift 2 sails with our fixtures in international waters. We align the warranty conditions for offshore applications on a project-by-project basis.

Product Choice

Choose based on lighting requirements and installation conditions, in ascending order of luminous flux: Piranha SS (8,400 lm) for washing areas and machinery, DarkLicht S SS (9,600 lm) where glare-free light is needed, Snapper SS (up to 23,800 lm) as a versatile floodlight, Barracuda SS (44,100 lm) for cranes and heavy-duty equipment, and the Orca SS (111,300 lm) for masts and large work platforms. Not sure which one to choose? We’ll calculate the correct configuration for each location, including a lighting analysis.

Certification & Standards

Corrosion and explosion hazards are separate issues. The SS fixtures are CE-marked and built in accordance with IEC standards, but are not ATEX certified. If your corrosive zone also has ATEX zoning, please explain the situation to us: often the lighting position can be chosen so that the fixture remains outside the ATEX zone while the light still reaches the zone.

Environment & Cleaning

The SS line is IP69K rated: resistant to high-pressure and close-range steam cleaning. Foam cleaning and common detergents from the food industry are also no problem. For aggressive or unusual chemicals, we supply CHEM versions; tell us which agents you use and we will specify the correct version.

Yes. The fixtures are suitable for HACCP environments: a smooth, cleanable 316L housing without dirt-trapping edges, chemically hardened glass instead of plastic, and IP69K sealing against penetrating cleaning water. Farm Frites uses these versions in their drying tunnels. We consciously do not claim formal food certification; however, we consistently design according to the hygiene requirements that HACCP environments demand.

Yes, that is the core domain of the SS line: the most severe corrosion categories (C5-M and CX according to ISO 12944), where even our C5-rated standard range gives way to solid stainless steel. The Boskalis Bokalift 2 sails with our fixtures in international waters, permanently exposed to salt spray and deck water.

316L is resistant to the humid atmosphere containing chlorine and H2S found in sewage treatment plants and wet basements. Because concentrations vary greatly depending on the installation, we provide recommendations on a case-by-case basis; for heavy chemical exposure, we will jointly select a CHEM version with adapted seals.

This leads you to the SS-HT combinations: 316L stainless steel and continuous operation up to +120°C, with the driver outside the hot zone. Think of drying tunnels in the food industry or steam-rich process zones. You can find the complete temperature information on our high-temperature page.

Assembly & Installation

You mount the fixture like a standard floodlight, but the details determine its lifespan: use stainless steel mounting hardware, prevent direct contact between stainless steel and galvanized steel or aluminum (galvanic corrosion), and carefully finish cable glands. We think along with you per project about mounting and cable routing; the supplied brackets are standard 316L.

Yes. The fixtures are designed for cranes, ships, and mobile equipment, with vibration-resistant mounting and safety locking. On Boskalis' Bokalift 2, they perform on a floating crane vessel, the toughest combination of vibration, salt, and weather.

Maintenance & longevity

Little. 316L is low-maintenance, not maintenance-free: with heavy chloride exposure (C5-M/CX), we recommend periodic rinsing with fresh water to prevent surface discoloration, and an annual visual check of seals and glands. In zones with intensive cleaning, this cleaning is practically handled automatically during regular washdowns.

The fixtures are modular in design; components such as glass panels and mounting parts are available and replaceable through us. Please contact us with a photo of the damage and the model number, and our engineers will advise whether replacing the part or the entire fixture is the best course of action.

Electrical connection & control

Both are available. AC models are the standard for permanent installations connected to mains power. 24V DC models are available for ships, vehicles, and installations with low-voltage power supplies, such as the Piranha SS, Snapper SS, and DarkLicht S SS.

For most models, 0-10V and DALI dimming options are available, depending on the version. Please indicate when ordering if you require dimming, and we will include it in the configuration.
