Decision Aid

When should you choose the Goby?

The workhorse between the compact Goby Mini and the heavier Piranha: a classic, powerful, and versatile work light for everyday professional use.

  • A classic professional work light is desired for machines, vehicles and service points
  • The environment requires IP69K and IK10
  • The 12- or 24-volt on-board power system must be connected directly: Deutsch connector in the housing, no cable or junction box
  • Multiple optics are required to tune the light distribution to the application
  • Output, format, and robustness must be in balance: four power levels in a single enclosure
  • The operating temperature ranges up to +120 °C: the Goby HT

When another luminaire fits better

The Goby is not intended for every task. Being clear about its limitations leads to a better end result.

  • Maximum mechanical robustness has priority: then the Piranha
  • The mounting position is very compact: then the Goby Mini
  • A larger area calls for a floodlight: then the Marlin or the Snapper
  • Dazzling of the driver or environment must be actively limited: then the DarkLicht Mini of DarkLicht S
  • ATEX or Ex certification is required
  • A work light made entirely of 316L stainless steel is required: then the Piranha 316L

Optics

Optics and measured beam angles

The lens angle determines where the light ends up. Below are the measured angles from our own IES library, with the optic name as the ordering code next to it. An optic name is not a measured value: the 14° optic measures 13°. If you are in doubt between two angles, we will substantiate the choice with a free lighting calculation.

The beam angle is the full angle between the directions in which the intensity has decreased to 50 % of the peak; the field angle is 10 %. The upward light output is 0 % at 0° tilt. Combinations of optics within a single luminaire are possible.

Mounting

Video editing software

On machines and vehicles, the connection determines just as well as the bracket or a work light whether it will reach its lifespan. The Goby is therefore designed around the Deutsch connector: no cable, no junction box, no cable gland.

Product render of the Goby work light, side view

Deutsch DTP04 in the housing

The two-pole connector sits directly in the casting: connection is one click on the on-board network, without a cable, junction box, or cable gland as a source of failure.

The HT version features a remote BLD075 driver; the DRB-1 houses this unit outside the hot zone, with 15 meters of SiHF cable in between.

A fall protection cable is optionally available and is often a strict requirement when installed above a work area. The DRB-1 driver box houses the remote driver and is mounted directly behind the luminaire using the rear mount bracket. The Crane Light Stabilizer has its own product page. The Goby HT works up to +120 °C

Where standard work lights fall short thermally, the Goby HT continues to function: near furnaces, smelters, and engine compartments up to +120 °C ambient temperature. Chemically toughened glass and a 120° distribution are standard.

The AC version keeps the driver out of the hot zone: a 15-meter-long SiHF-OB cable bridges the distance to the remote BLD075, which can fit in the DRB-1 driver box. The DC version connects directly to 9–32 V and operates up to +110 °C.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your question not listed, or would you like something calculated? An engineer will respond within 1 business day.

All three are classic work lights. The Goby Mini is the compact entry-level model with 2,300 lm and weighing 1.1 kg; the Goby is the versatile workhorse with up to 8,200 lm; the Piranha is the most robust variant, weighing 3.1 kg, also available in all-316L and AC versions. For glare-free work lighting, there is the DarkLicht line.

The Goby 9 (55 W) is the most commonly installed model: 6,300 lm at 12 and 24 V. If less is needed, go with the Goby 6 (35 W). If maximum output or efficiency is required, choose the Pro (7,200 lm from 55 W) or the Ultra (8,200 lm from 65 W, 24 V only). For high-temperature areas, there’s the HT.

The Deutsch DTP04 is the standard in vehicle and machine construction: waterproof, vibration-resistant, and can be mounted without a junction box or cable gland. Because the connector is integrated into the casting, there is no cable that can be damaged; connecting is just one click on the vehicle's electrical system.

Yes. The Goby 6, 9, and Pro operate on 9 to 32 VDC and are therefore compatible with 12- and 24-volt systems; the Ultra requires 20 to 32 VDC and is therefore a 24-volt luminaire. The drivers are integrated onto the circuit board; no external driver is required.

For the DC versions, dimming is custom work because the drivers on the printed circuit board deliver a constant current; group switching is possible via the on-board electrical system. The HT AC version dims via 0–10 V, PWM, and DALI-2.

The 38° is the standard choice for working surfaces at 8 to 30 meters. The 14° spot (measured 13°) bridges distance, the 69° illuminates broadly up close, and the 14° × 46° flare lays an asymmetrical path along boom, lane, or quay. Combinations within a single machine are common; we provide advice per mounting position.

Yes. The luminaire has been tested to IP66, IP67, IP68, and IP69K. All of these classes are mentioned because they are different tests: IP69K is high-pressure and high-temperature steam jet, IP68 is immersion. One does not imply the other.

Yes. The vibration class is 6 G at resonance, tested in accordance with IEC 60068-2-6, with shock testing in accordance with IEC 60068-2-27. The housing is a single casting without assembled parts, and the 316L bracket clamps without limitation within −60° to +30°.

Yes. The housing contains less than 0.08 % of copper and has a 2-layer titanium-based e-coating; the bracket is made of 316L. This meets corrosion class C5 Industrial and Maritime standards. The Goby is not available as a fully 316L work light; if that requirement is mandatory, please consider the Piranha 316L.

The 360,000 hours is a TM-21 L90B05 value: at that point, at least 95 % of the luminaires will still be delivering at least 90 % of their initial light output. This is more stringent than the standard L70 and L80 specifications. For the HT model, a scale based on ambient temperature applies, up to 51,400 hours at +120 °C.

No. The luminaire is not intended for hazardous areas. If ATEX is a requirement, please discuss this in advance, and we will determine a suitable solution together.

Yes. With the Deutsch connector, four power outputs in a single housing, and drivers on the circuit board, the Goby is designed for integration into machine construction. For mass production, we tailor the optics, voltage, color temperature, and mounting to the machine architecture.

CE, IEC 60598, EN 55015, EN 61547 and the EMC Directive. IEC 60598 covers construction, electrical safety, and thermal behavior. Configurations for North America are available upon request.
