Home " Lighting at high temperatures
At ambient temperatures above +50°C, standard LED fixtures fail prematurely: the driver fails, the lenses warp, and the light output drops dramatically. JEL Products is the only European specialist to offer a fully heat-resistant LED product line designed for continuous operation up to +120°C with a warranty, with permitted peaks up to +130°C. From the compact Goby HT work light to the Orca HT with 73,600 lumens: the same temperature resistance, with the right light output for every application.
The difference lies in the system design: heat-resistant materials, chemically hardened glass, silicone wiring, and crucially, the driver outside the hot zone in an external DRB driver box. This approach proves itself daily at companies like Tata Steel, VPK Paper, Farm Frites, and Rockwool.
Within the normal operating temperature range, our standard DCbright product line is sufficient: floodlights and work lights rated for -40/-45°C to +50°C. Heat-resistant versions are not necessary here.
The domain of the HT line. All six heat-resistant fixtures can be deployed here in AC versions, up to +120°C with full warranty. DC versions (24V) for machines and installations with low-voltage power supplies can be deployed up to +110°C.
Short-term temperature spikes of up to +130°C are permitted without affecting the warranty. Examples include oven doors opening, batch changes, or cleaning cycles with hot steam: the fixtures are designed to handle these conditions.
Above +130°C, the warranty is void: reliable LED lighting for those ambient temperatures does not exist. However, there is almost always an engineering solution: positioning the fixture outside the hottest zone, shielding it from radiation, or shining it in from the outside through a conduit. We will calculate this with you.
The right choice depends not only on lumens or wattage, but primarily on application, mounting position, working distance, weight, mechanical load, and the desired balance between efficiency and robustness. Within our floodlight line, the choice ranges from compact entry-level models to powerful luminaires for large work areas and heavy industrial applications.
The compact heat-resistant work lamp for task and inspection lighting close to the process.
The proven all-rounder of the HT line, also available entirely in 316L stainless steel for the food industry.
The heat-resistant canopy light for drying tunnels and ceiling mounting in hot process areas.
The robust HT floodlight for furnace zones and heavy industry, the choice of Tata Steel and Rockwool.
The linear HT luminaire for process lines, climate chambers, and drying systems.
The most powerful heat-resistant floodlight on the market, in three versions, with or without HT optics.
External driver mounting outside the hot zone: DRB-1 (up to 200 W) and DRB-2 (up to 2000 W), IP67 with 100,000 hours driver lifespan.
| Product | Type | Power | Luminous flux | lumens per watt | Max. temperature | Driver |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goby HT | work light | 13 W | 2600 lm | 200 | +120°C | extern (DRB) |
| Snapper HT | floodlight | 35 W | 7,000 lm | 200 | +120°C AC / +110°C DC | extern (DRB) |
| Manta HT | canopy light | 75 W | 14,400 lm | 192 | +120°C | extern (DRB) |
| Barracuda HT | floodlight | 120 W | 20,600 lm | 172 | +120°C | extern (DRB) |
| Linear HT | linear | 30 - 120 W | up to 25,600 lm | 213 | +120°C | extern (DRB) |
| Orca HT | floodlight | 240 – 320 W | 55,400 - 73,600 lm | up to 230 | +120°C | extern (DRB) |
All values were measured at a reference temperature of +50°C. AC fixtures protect themselves with built-in temperature feedback: as the temperature rises, they automatically dim (with good airflow, typically no more than 50% of the luminous flux; with heavy contamination, down to at least 10%), and in case of overheating, they shut themselves off. DC versions do not dim and operate at 100% up to +110°C; only efficiency decreases slightly at high temperatures. Full warranty up to an ambient temperature of +120°C; brief peaks up to +130°C are permitted. DC versions are rated up to +110°C. See the product pages for complete specifications.
The system behind the +120°C guarantee
A JEL HT system always consists of two parts: the heat-resistant fixture in the hot zone and the driver in a DRB driver box outside that zone, connected via silicone cabling. This separation is why we can guarantee continuous operation up to +120°C where integrated fixtures fail.
In virtually every failure case of LED lighting in hot environments, the driver is the weak link: the electronics are more sensitive to heat than the LED itself. That is why the entire HT line works with remote drivers, mounted in industrial DRB driver boxes outside the hot zone: the DRB-1 (up to 200 W) and DRB-2 (up to 2000 W), IP67 sealed with a driver lifespan of 100,000 hours. Heat-resistant silicone cables bridge the distance between the box and the fixture: up to 50 meters with the standard cable, and up to approximately 150 meters with a special high-temperature connector on the fixture and a separately supplied cable. The result: the LED performs in the heat, the electronics stay cool and accessible for service, without production downtime.
Lighting for hot environments is not chosen based on lumens alone. The actual thermal load on the fixture is decisive, and that consists of more than just the air temperature.
What to look out for:
Most of the failures we see in practice can be attributed to one of these estimation errors:
In hot process environments, the purchase price of the luminaire is rarely the biggest cost item. The true cost of lighting lies in what each replacement around it costs:
A fixture specified for the actual thermal load outperforms any cheaper +60°C to +80°C high bay in total cost. Our premise: the lighting follows your maintenance intervals, not the other way around. We will calculate the payback period for each project for you.
Reliable lighting in hot zones is fundamentally a safety measure. The HT system reduces your people's exposure:
Every hot environment presents its own challenges: radiant heat in the steel mill, steam above the paper machine, cleaning cycles in the food industry. Six application areas where our HT luminaires perform daily, with an in-depth page for each industry.
Radiant heat from hot steel is the determining factor here, not the air temperature. Fixtures with chemically hardened glass and remote drivers can withstand conditions above rolling lines and casting platforms.
Above the drying section of a paper machine, heat, steam, and paper dust prevail simultaneously. IP67 fixtures with external drivers perform where standard lighting fails within a year.
Around baking ovens, frying lines, and sterilization zones, heat, fatty vapors, and intensive cleaning come together. HT fixtures can withstand +120°C as well as steam and high-pressure cleaning.
Climate chambers alternate between extreme heat and cold, often with high humidity. AC models withstand thousands of temperature cycles from +120°C and DC from +110°C.
In glass furnaces and tempering lines, high air temperatures combine with intense radiant heat from the glowing product. Glass optics, not plastic, are a strict requirement here.
In muffle furnaces, drying tunnels, and process plants, the question is rarely "more lumens," but rather "which fixture will survive here." We calculate the thermal load per position.
In Rockwool's stone wool factory in Croatia, the melting and curing zones are characterized by structurally high temperatures. JEL supplied heat-resistant fixtures with remote drivers that perform continuously here, whereas the previous lighting always failed prematurely.

Conventional lighting at Tata Steel IJmuiden frequently failed in the steelmaking process due to the combination of ambient and radiant heat. Our HT fixtures, with the driver located outside the hot zone, reduce maintenance and keep the process illuminated.

Below are the core specifications of the three most commonly used HT fixtures. All values apply to continuous operation up to a +120°C ambient temperature; short-term peaks up to +130°C are permitted.
DC versions (24V) are available upon request and are limited to +110°C. Specifications for the Goby HT, Manta HT, and Linear HT can be found on the product pages or requested via the datasheets.
All lifespans are specified as L90B10 at the stated ambient temperature: after this number of operating hours, at least 90% of the LED modules will still deliver at least 90% of their original luminous flux. This allows you to see exactly how the heat at your location affects the service life.

All fixtures in the HT line operate continuously at ambient temperatures up to +120°C, fully covered by the warranty. Short-term peaks up to +130°C are permitted; temperatures above +130°C void the warranty. DC versions (24V) are limited to +110°C. This applies to the entire line, from the compact Goby HT to the Orca HT.
No. Be critical of suppliers who claim otherwise. LED chips physically degrade quickly above this limit; reliable LED lighting for ambient temperatures above +130°C does not exist. The solution lies in engineering: positioning the fixture outside the hottest zone, shielding it from direct radiation, or shining into the hot space from the outside with a feed-through construction. We make this decision together with you on a per-position basis.
Accelerated degradation. The driver, the most heat-sensitive component, usually fails first, often within months. Additionally, the lens discolors, the seal dries out, and the light output quickly decreases. This is the pattern we find with almost every customer before switching to HT fixtures: at Tata Steel, conventional lighting in the steel process repeatedly failed prematurely.
Standard industrial LED fixtures are rated from -40°C to +50°C. The HT series reaches +120°C through a combination of measures: the driver is located outside the hot zone in a DRB driver box, the wiring is made of heat-resistant silicone, optics are made of glass instead of plastic, and the housing is made of specially selected and treated materials that can withstand continuous heat.
Yes. The warranty fully applies to continuous operation at an ambient temperature of +120°C: the fixtures are designed for this. Short-term peaks up to +130°C are also covered. Only structural use above +130°C falls outside the warranty conditions.
The AC fixtures have built-in temperature feedback that protects the fixture from overheating. If the internal temperature rises too high—for example, due to heavy buildup on the cooling fins—the fixture automatically dims: with good airflow, this is typically limited to about 50% of the luminous flux, and in extreme cases up to 10%. In the event of overheating, the fixture shuts itself off completely. DC versions do not have this dimming feature: they continue to operate at 100% up to +110°C, with only a slight decrease in efficiency due to the high temperature. Regular cleaning of the cooling fins prevents the need for this power reduction.
Choose based on lighting requirements and installation conditions. As a rule of thumb, in ascending order of luminous flux: Goby HT (2,600 lm) for small spaces and climate chambers, Snapper HT (7,000 lm) as a compact all-rounder, Manta HT (14,400 lm) for ceiling mounting, Barracuda HT (20,600 lm) as a robust workhorse, Linear HT (up to 25,600 lm) for linear zones, and the Orca HT (up to 73,600 lm) for tall masts and large halls. Not sure which one to choose? We’ll calculate the correct configuration for each location, including lighting calculations.
High temperature and explosion hazard are two separate issues. The HT fixtures are CE-marked and built in accordance with IEC standards, but are not ATEX certified. If your hot zone also has ATEX zoning, please explain the situation to us. Often, the lighting position can be chosen so that the fixture remains outside the ATEX zone while the light still reaches the zone.
Yes. The Barracuda HT and Orca HT are IP69K-rated: resistant to high-pressure and steam cleaning at close range. The Snapper HT is IP67-rated in the aluminum version and IP69K-rated in the 316L stainless steel version. This is a crucial feature, especially in the food industry, where daily cleaning cycles and heat are common.
Yes. Virtually every HT fixture is available in 316L stainless steel (SS version), and for harsh environments, there is also a CHEM version with additional chemical protection. Farm Frites uses the SN-35-SS Snapper HT in 316L in its drying tunnels: heat, grease fumes, and cleaning all combined.
Yes, and this is often underestimated: with hot steel, glass, or furnaces, the direct infrared load on the luminaire is often greater than the air temperature suggests. The HT series therefore uses glass instead of plastic and heat-resistant materials that can withstand IR loads. For extreme cases, such as nuclear or heavy process environments, RAD versions with radiation shielding are available.
Yes. The operating temperature range is from -45°C to +120°C. This makes the fixtures suitable for climate chambers and test rooms that cyclically alternate between extreme heat and frost, for thousands of cycles, without seals or electronics failing.
Downtime in hot zones is more than an maintenance issue. Poorly lit furnace areas, rolling lines, and walkways increase the risk of incidents, and the forced replacement of fixtures above an operating line is a risky job in itself. Because HT fixtures continue to perform reliably and the driver is accessible outside the hot zone, visibility of the process and escape routes is guaranteed, eliminating risky emergency replacements during production.
Because the driver is the most heat-sensitive component in an LED fixture. By placing the driver in a DRB driver box outside the hot zone, the LED performs in the heat while the electronics stay cool. The DRB-1 (up to 200 W) and DRB-2 (up to 2000 W) are IP67 sealed, have a 100,000-hour driver lifespan, and remain accessible for service without production downtime. Heat-resistant silicone cables bridge the distance to the fixture. As standard, the fixture is supplied with cable up to 25 meters (depending on the model); up to 50 meters is always possible with the standard cable. Even longer distances of approximately 150 meters are available: the fixture then receives a special high-temperature connector and the cable is supplied separately. Above 50 meters, additional filtering in the cabling may be required; our engineers will determine this per configuration.
You install the luminaires themselves like a standard industrial floodlight, with an adjustable bracket of ±240°. The difference lies in the system: you place the DRB driver box outside the hot zone in a position that remains accessible for service, and the heat-resistant silicone cable (standard up to 25 meters, available up to approximately 150 meters) is routed to the luminaire. We consider driver position and cable routes on a project-by-project basis. Installation can be done by your own technical service department; maintenance on the driver can then be performed without entering the hot zone.
The service life is temperature-dependent and is specified as L90B10: after the specified number of operating hours, at least 90% of the LEDs will still deliver at least 90% of the original luminous flux. For the HT line, the service life is 360,000 hours at +50 °C, 103,000 hours at +85 °C, and 71,700 hours at +105 °C (Snapper HT, Goby HT, and Linear HT: 90,700 hours) and 51,400 hours at a continuous +120 °C. For comparison: continuous operation amounts to approximately 8,760 hours per year, so even at +120 °C, that’s nearly six years of uninterrupted exposure to the heat. The driver in the DRB box is rated for 100,000 hours and can be easily replaced separately.
Little. Maintenance is limited to cleaning glass and cooling fins during scheduled shutdowns: contamination insulates and increases the temperature of the fixture. Because the driver is located outside the hot zone, driver service can even take place during production. Therefore, no line needs to be shut down for lighting.
The HT line achieves up to 230 lm/W (Orca HT), whereas older gas-discharge and first-generation LED systems often remain well below 100 lm/W: the same light output with significantly less power. However, the greatest savings in hot environments come from avoiding replacements: no fixtures breaking down every few months, no aerial lifts, and no production downtime. If desired, we can calculate the payback period for you on a project-by-project basis.
The AC versions are powered via the DRB driver box with a wide input range, suitable for common industrial mains voltages. Additionally, 24V DC versions are available for mobile and machine-specific applications. These are thermally limited to a +110°C ambient temperature.
Yes, 0-10V dimming is available via the driver in the DRB box, with DALI as an option. This is relevant for climate chambers and test rooms where the light level is part of the test protocol, and for zones where the light is switched back outside of production hours.
Yes, that is the core of our approach. We assess the actual thermal load (ambient temperature and radiant heat) for each lighting position and combine that with a lighting calculation for the installation. This way, you know in advance which luminaire is guaranteed to perform at which position. We have provided this engineering for, among others, Tata Steel, VPK Paper, and Rockwool.
Yes. For positions where a standard surface-mounted fixture is insufficient, for example oven feed-throughs, integration into installations, or serial production for machine builders, we engineer custom solutions based on the HT line. We supply to industrial customers and OEM parties in 25+ countries. Please present your situation to us via the form at the bottom of this page.
Yes, and in case of doubt about the actual thermal load, we even recommend that. With a trial installation in the most demanding position, you can see how the luminaire performs in your environment before investing, and we can immediately map the actual temperature load at that position. Please contact us using the form at the bottom of this page to arrange a trial installation.
