PROJECT CASE

High mast retrofit for the P&O Ferries terminal in Europoort

JEL replaced failing sports lighting with 119 DarkLicht fixtures mounted on 30 new pole structures—more efficient, casting fewer shadows, and completed in just two weeks.

PROJECT CONTEXT

Replacing failing sports lighting with port-resistant lighting

P&O Ferries had already converted the terminal in Europoort to LED lighting in 2021, using a well-known A-brand from the sports lighting market. In practice, it turned out that those fixtures were not made for the demanding conditions of a haven terminal.

Just because a fixture proves itself in one branch doesn't mean it will work in a different environment. To help P&O out of a bind, JEL designed and delivered a new, port-adapted lighting installation.

THE CHALLENGE

Efficient and low-shadow design at an operational terminal

The new installation had to be designed based on an existing site layout, requiring not only a lighting renewal but also pole supports and structural maintenance. The biggest challenge was to create the most efficient design possible that complied with NEN-EN 12464-2 while minimizing shadows.

This required extra care during execution: the terminal is in constant motion, and ferry passengers unfamiliar with the area are also present. Therefore, good precautionary measures and timely coordination with the Port Duty Managers were essential.

CURRENT SITUATION

From a failed retrofit to a port-tuned solution

The previous LED retrofit with sport fixtures did not meet expectations at the port. Instead of installing individual fixtures again, JEL took a comprehensive approach: a new lighting design, new pole structures, and an installation tailored to the realities of a ferry terminal.

Highly focused DarkLicht fixtures provided more light on the grounds, using significantly less power than the previously installed lighting.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Type

Harbor terminal, retrofit of existing LED lighting (high mast)

Location

Europoort, Netherlands

Type of client

P&O Ferries

Environment

A ferry terminal in continuous operation with passenger traffic, located in a coastal setting

Current situation

Previous LED retrofit with sport fixtures was unsatisfactory at the port.

Scope of JEL Products

Lighting design and engineering, new mast structures, DarkLicht fixtures, installation, and maintenance.

Used products

119 DarkLicht DL1 luminaires on 30 light poles, each 26 m tall

Technical result

42 lux with a uniformity of 0.40 to 0.55; approximately 66% in energy savings; completed in 2 weeks.

Relevant standards and requirements

NEN-EN 12464-2 and NEN 1010.

OUR ENGINEERING-FIRST APPROACH

First the environment, then the system, then the product

JEL designed the lighting concept based on the actual situation at the terminal: an existing site layout, fixed mast positions, strict requirements for uniformity and shadow, and a site that is continuously in operation.

By first determining the situation and light distribution, and only then choosing the luminaire, an efficient installation was created that complies with NEN-EN 12464-2. The electrical installation was carried out in accordance with NEN 1010.

The Project in Focus

Scope Van Jel Products

From lighting design and mast construction to installation and maintenance

JEL provided the complete retrofit for the P&O terminal in Europoort: from lighting design and engineering to new mast structures, DarkLicht fixtures, installation and maintenance.

Efficient lighting design

JEL designed the lighting to be as efficient as possible within NEN-EN 12464-2, with sharply directed luminaires that bring more light to the site and limit stray light.

Shadow reduction

Based on the existing terrain layout, the lighting design was developed to minimize shadowing, despite the fixed mast positions.

New mast constructions

In addition to the lighting, the project also requested new pole supports and structural maintenance. JEL supplied and installed the new pole structures for the 30 light poles.

Safe work on a ferry terminal

The terminal is constantly in motion, with a lot of passengers who are not familiar with the area. Careful precautions and coordination with the Port Duty Managers allowed for safe and uninterrupted work.

Payback period calculator for LED lighting

Up to 66% in energy savings

Thanks to improved light distribution, reduced light pollution, and newer technology, the system saves approximately 66.3% compared to the previously installed LED lighting.

Delivered in two weeks

The entire project, including new mast constructions, was completed in just two weeks on a continuously operational terminal.

SOLUTION AND RESULT

More light, significantly lower energy consumption, completed in two weeks

The system provides 42 lux at the terminal with a uniformity between 0.40 and 0.55. At a few locations, a decision was made to provide more light in accordance with modifier 5.3.3 of the standard, where 30 lux is normally the requirement.

Compared to the previously installed LED lighting, this solution delivers energy savings of approximately 66.3%. The entire project was fully completed in just two weeks.

USED PRODUCT

119 DarkLicht DL1 fixtures on 30 light poles

The terminal is equipped with 119 DarkLicht DL1 Fixtures, distributed across 30 light poles, each 26 meters high. The DarkLicht was chosen for its sharp, focused light distribution, which keeps the light on the site and minimizes light spill.

It was precisely that better bundling that made the difference compared to the previously installed sports luminaires: more usable light on the terminal, with less power.

Project-related questions

The terminal was already equipped with LED lighting in 2021 from a well-known A-brand in the sports lighting market. Those fixtures were not designed for the demanding conditions of a port terminal. Just because a fixture proves itself in one industry doesn't mean it will work in another environment.

JEL designed a new lighting system tailored to the port, featuring DarkLicht fixtures that focus the light into a narrow beam. As a result, more light reaches the site and less is lost to light pollution, while using significantly less power.

Compared to the previously installed LED lighting, this solution saves approximately 66.3%, thanks to better beam focus, less stray light, and newer technology.

The terminal is in constant motion, and there are also passengers who are unfamiliar with the area. With careful precautions and timely coordination with the Port Duty Managers, the work could be carried out safely and without disruption.

The entire project, including new mast constructions, was completely delivered in just two weeks.
